KINGSTON, R.I.—A new era for the Gordon College Swimming program was announced in a big way this weekend, as the Scots wrapped up an exciting three days at the NEISDA Championships on Sunday. The pressure of the regional stage did not intimidate a stable of youth on both squads and the two teams combined to break 22 school records during their stay in Rhode Island.
There were a lot of firsts for the Gordon Swim teams during the 2013-14 school year, but none more impressive than the feats they accomplished in both team and individual competition in the New England Championships. In addition to their bevy of broken records, Gordon Swimming earned 20 All-New England awards, as well over 40 personal best times.
Nicole St. Martin (Westport, Mass.) was the first swimmer to earn an All-New England nomination on Sunday with a fantastic performance in the 1650-Yard Freestyle. St. Martin finished in seventh place in the finals, finishing two-tenths of a second behind Bridgewater State's Chelsea Nolan with a 19:00.61 time in the mile-long race.
Emily David (North Kingston, R.I.) broke her own record in the 50-Yard Backstroke and earned an All-New England nod in the process by finishing in eighth. The sophomore standout broke two records on the weekend. In the men's event, Daniel Fauber broke the school record with a time of 25.24 for a third-place finish behind two Keene State swimmers.
Joshua Florez (West Hartford, Conn.) backed up Fauber's lead and finished with a third-place mark of his own in the 200-Yard Breaststroke. The sophomore finished only three seconds behind leader Jared Hyde (Keene State), who narrowly missed breaking the meet record. Florez's finish gave him an All-NE nod.
Cameron Schofield (Middleboro, Mass.) broke the school record in the 100-Yard IM with a time of 58.08 seconds. His time was good enough for fifth place in the event and earned him an All-Region acknowledgement. Schofield was seventh-seeded swimmer in the finals, but a strong effort slotted him up two spots.
The Scots ended the long event with All-New England efforts in the 400-Yard Freestyle Relay in both the men's and women's competition. The Gordon women notched a sixth-place effort, while the men broke the school record in the event with a fourth-place finish.
Overall the two teams finished with their best results ever in a regional competition. The women finished 11
th with a team score of 424, despite being at the disadvantage of not getting scoring for diving events. The men found themselves in an even better position with a sixth-place—scoring 304 points.
