Track and Field Rumble to Solid Finish at USM Invite

Men's Results / Women's Results
GORHAM, Maine - The Gordon College men's and women's indoor track and field teams descended en masse upon the Costello Sports Complex for host Southern Maine's second invitational of the winter season.

The meet opened with a multi-team prayer on the infield led by representatives from Assumption College, which was a great time to be united, encouraged and reminded of our calling in Christ.

The Scots got off on the right foot in the opening events, as junior transfer Zak Flowers took first place in the men's 35-pound weight throw with a heave of 14.47 meters. Teammates Ryan Williamson and Dave Chamberlain also had strong showings, with throws of 11.19 and 11.16m respectively, good for third and fourth-place finishes.

On the track, sophomores Wes Nelson (16:28.02, 4th place) and Nathan Swaim (16:35.16, 5th place) picked up nine points for the Scots in the 5000-meter run, while counterpart Mariah Geiger earned silver (8 points) in the women's version with an impressive 20:03.34. In three meets this winter, Geiger has lowered her time nearly 2 minutes from a 21:59 at the season opener hosted by UMass-Boston at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston. Her best race to date comes on the heels of a 20:42 that she ran last week at Smith College.

After a short delay due to a faulty timing system, the meet was back under way with the 4 x 200m relay. Gordon's men's team consisted of one senior, Ben Sebuufu and three freshmen: Colin Smith, Farnel Maxime and Andrew Fiedler. This quartet of able bodies brought the baton home in 1:40.5, to the tune of a third-place finish.

In both the men's 400m and 600m, Fighting Scots claimed the first two places. At 400 meters, junior captain Neal Olson (52.95) and freshman Asher Gray (53.39) captured the honors, while at 600 meters it was Sebuufu (1:36.47) and Maxime (1:36.93) providing the 1-2 punch.

Sophomore captain Chris Warne represented his team well as the first-place collegiate thrower in the men's shot put, registering a mark of 11.67m.

Not to be outdone, the Gordon women's track and field athletes responded to the call to excellence with three new school records:

Freshman Corrine Previte lowered her own mark in the 600-meter run, with a 1:44.21 sixth-place finish. By dipping under 1:45, Previte also qualified for the NCAA DIII New England Championships later in February.

Sophomore Leanne Beedle, coming off a school-record performance in the mile last week at Smith, ran 3:12.24 for 1000m, eclipsing assistant coach Samantha Goedeke's 2010 standard by over 7 seconds. Coach Goedeke has watched three of her four indoor marks fall during the first three meets of the season. Her distinguished name remains on the record board by virtue of the 4 x 800 meter record she ran last season with teammates Beedle, Mary-Beth Gray and Leanna D'Alfonso.

In the Lady Scots' final race of the day, they took down the 4 x 400m relay record for the second time this season with a 4:21.89 3rd place finish. The perpetrators were sophomores Mariah Geiger, Beedle and D'Alfonso and freshman teammate Previte. The foursome will next compete together at the New England Championships.

Throughout the day, the lead in the men's competition shifted between all three teams—Gordon and Division II rivals, Merrimack and Assumption. At one point, late in the meet Gordon sat on top briefly, but without athletes in the jumps, hurdles, and dashes (55m and 200m), the Scots succumbed to the larger squads.

In perhaps the meet's most exciting event, Gordon's men came from behind, pulled even, and then into the lead against Assumption's 4 x 400m relay team. Neal Olson handed the baton to Ben Sebuufu for the relay's final leg with a small advantage, which Sebuufu, in his third race of the day, nearly maintained to the tape. The team, which also included Asher Gray and Colin Smith, ran a season best 3:38.67, for second place. The men's final team score was Assumption 157, Merrimack 140, and Gordon 128.

Other noteworthy Fighting Scots' performances included:

Colin Ponzani, 2:08.34 (2nd) in the men's 800m;

Andrew Kwiatkowski, 2:54.54 (3rd) in the men's 1000m and 4:53.94 (3rd) in the men's mile;

Alex Russell, 4:55.33 (4th) in the men's mile;

Liam Adams, 10:10.60 (5th) in the men's 3000m;

Gordon men Andrew Fiedler, Dave Chamberlain, Ryan Williamson 5th – 6th – 7th in the men's shot put (10.29m, 9.88m, 9.79m);

Hannah Fisher, 5:52.31 (12th) in the women's mile, first of seven Gordon women in the event; 11:39.33 (13th) in the 3000m;

 Kelsey Leighton, 8.69m (19th) in the women's shot put and 9.25m in the women's weight throw (17th)
