MILTON, Mass.— Gordon Women's Basketball battled their way back from a double-digit deficit, but the comeback fell just short, as the Scots fell to Curry 68-58 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Saturday afternoon in Milton. The Colonels improved to 13-8 on the season and 9-5 in league play, while the Fighting Scots fell to 5-16 overall and 1-13 in CCC contests.
Curry took its biggest lead of the first half (27-14) after junior Christina Deiorio (Stoughton, Mass.) split a pair from the charity stripe with 8:37 on the clock. With four seconds left in the first frame, Gordon cut the deficit to seven (41-34) after senior Lauren Kranyak (Locust Grove, Va.) sank a three-pointer to conclude the first half scoring.
The Fighting Scots opened the second half with a 9-3 run, trimming the lead to one (44-43) with 16:18 remaining in regulation. Kranyak started the run with another shot from beyond the arc and later capped it off with a made jumper. The Colonels answered with a 19-4 run, claiming a 63-47 edge with 6:40 left in the second period. Curry maintained a steady lead throughout the remainder of the game, en route to the 68-58 final.
Senior Ashley Assarian (Chicopee, Mass.) led all scorers with 24 points, including 18 in the first half, while drilling 6-of-10 attempts from beyond the arc. Junior Kylie Beltz (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) added 16 points, eight rebounds and also dished out a game-high eight assists.
Gordon was led by Kranyak with a team-best 20 points, while also pulling down nine boards. Sophomore Olivia Vetere (Mahopac, N.Y.) chipped in with a season-high 14 points, while freshman Fredi Nielson (Bridgeport, Conn.) recorded a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Scots missed junior forward Brooke Kratche (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), who came into the contest as the fourth leading scorer in the CCC averaging 16.2 points per game.
Both teams return to CCC action on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., as the Colonels host Roger Williams, while the Fighting Scots travel to the University of New England.
