Softball Celebrates Senior Day with Twinbill Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
WENHAM, Mass.— Celebrated seniors Skylar Bareford (Stonington, Conn.) and Kendall Bukuras (North Falmouth, Mass.) each turned in dynamic efforts to lead the Fighting Scots to a doubleheader sweep of Maine-Farmington on Senior Day. The Scots showed some serious power in game one, doubling up the Beavers 10-5, before winning a 3-0 pitchers' duel in game two at the Gordon Softball Field.

Bukuras seemed to be at the center of almost every positive play for the Fighting Scots, showing an incredible glove and finding the holes with a bat in her hands. The shortstop doubled in her first at-bat in the bottom of the first and later scored on a passed ball to Gordon a 1-0 lead in game one.

Momentum quickly flowed in the other direction when the Beavers looked to have figured out Bareford's tempo in the circle. Devin Fitzgerald (Casco, Maine) doubled to the right field wall and advanced to third on a groundout to short. Despite two outs in the inning, the Beavers put together a string of three consecutive RBI hits to take a 3-1 lead. Emily Soule (Chelsea, Maine), Amy Jones (Augusta, Maine) and Katie Clark (Westbrook, Maine) were each credited with a RBI in the inning to flip the score.

Kara Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J.) tied the score with one swing of the back in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run shot to straight away centerfield. Stephanie Zaloom (Albany, N.Y.) singled as the next better and advanced to third on an error by the catcher as the Gordon freshman attempted to steal second. Brie Roberts (Chocorua, N.H.) continued the hit parade with a double to the gap in left-center to plate Zaloom and give Gordon a 4-3 lead.

Kiersten Bieren (Groton, Mass.) laid down a sacrifice bunt to escort Roberts to third base, but another throwing error by the Beavers allowed both runners to advance—giving Gordon a two-run lead. Alyssa Unumb (Bedford, Mass.) tapped a single past the pitcher for a base hit and the speedy Bieren was able to round third for another run. Katie Dariano (Albany, N.Y.) also reached on an error and eventually stole second to put two runners in scoring position.

Bukuras brought both runners home on a single to build Gordon's lead to five runs, with still only one out in the fourth. Pepper reached first on the fifth error of the frame by the Beavers, allowing Bukuras to score from second base. Gordon scored eight runs in the inning and opened up a 9-3 advantage.

Maine-Farmington put a small rally together in the top of the sixth after inning-opening knocks by Grover and Jillian Withee (Salem Township, Maine). Both Beavers' base-runners scored later in the inning on a pair of groundballs. However, Gordon added a run in the bottom of the inning and held off the Beavers in the seventh to preserve a 10-5 win.

UMF starter Courtney Fowler (Greensboro, N.C.) feel to 3-3 in the circle, striking out four, and only half of the Fighting Scots' runs were earned.
Game two was Gordon's quickest seven-inning contest of the season, a 3-0 triumph over the Beavers. Maine-Farmington was able to tally a hit in each of the first three innings, but Bareford received some outstanding defensive support from Bukuras to keep the Beavers off the board.

The Fighting Scots (12-20) took advantage of the scoreless innings and put together a spurt against UMF ace, Soule, in the bottom of the third. Meenan walked with one out in the frame and stole second uncontested. Bukuras knocked Meenan in with a base hit to right field and subsequently advanced to second as the ball squirted under the right fielder's glove.

Maine-Farmington (10-10) was not able to advance a runner past second for the remainder of the game as Bareford clamped down. Gordon added a third run on a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the sixth and Bareford retired batters in order to earn her second win of the day. The senior starter improves to 11-19 as the Scots' lone pitcher. Soule dropped to 6-4 as a starting pitcher for the Beavers.

Bukuras led the Scots with four hits on the day, while Pepper totaled three hits and two RBI.

Endicott College will be the top seed for the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball championship, which begins with opening-round games on Saturday, April 26. The Gulls (22-11-1 overall) earned the top seed by virtue of tying Salve Regina University (19-15 overall, 14-4 CCC) atop the regular-season standings with a 14-4 conference record.
Endicott, second-seeded Salve Regina, third-seeded Curry College (23-15, 12-6) and fourth-seeded University of New England (23-15, 12-6) all earned byes directly into the double-elimination phase of the tournament.
A pair of single-elimination opening round games will take place Saturday. Saturday's tournament action will include No. 5 seed Western New England University (18-16, 11-7) hosting No. 8 seed Gordon College (12-20, 6-12) at 1:00 p.m. in Springfield, Mass., and No. 6 seed Roger Williams University (18-14, 11-7) hosting No. 7 seed Nichols College (12-20, 7-11) at 5:30 p.m. in Bristol, R.I. The winners of Saturday's games will advance to the double-elimination phase of the tournament which is scheduled to begin Monday, April 28.
The winner of the Roger Williams vs. Nichols contest will face No. 3 seed Curry at 2:30 p.m. at Salve Regina. The winner of that game will face the second-seeded Seahawks 20 minutes after the end of the first game.
The winner of the Western New England vs. Gordon matchup will face No. 4 seed University of New England at 2:30 p.m. at Endicott. The winner of that game will face the top-seeded Gulls 20 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
CCC tiebreaking procedures were used to break three deadlocks in the regular-season standings. In all three cases, the first step – head-to-head play – offered no relief as the tied teams split their two-game regular-season series. All three ties were broken in the second step, which involves a comparison of records against other CCC teams starting from the top of the standings and working down until relief is possible.
Endicott and Salve posted identical 1-1 records against Curry, the eventual third seed, but the Gulls' 2-0 record against University of New England, the eventual fourth seed, earned Endicott the top seed.
Curry earned the number three seed over University of New England by virtue of posting a 1-1 record versus top-seeded Endicott, compared to UNE's 0-2 mark vs. the Gulls.
Western New England also captured the number five seed over Roger Williams as a result of a 1-1 record against Endicott, as opposed to the Hawks' 0-2 record.
Tournament action will continue on Thursday, May 1 at Endicott College and a satellite field at Gordon College, and will culminate with the championship game on Saturday, May 3. The CCC tournament champion will earn an automatic berth in the upcoming 2014 NCAA Division III Softball Championship.
