Box Score 2 WENHAM, Mass.—Playing on their home surface for the first time in 2014, the Gordon College Softball team completed a sweep of Wentworth Institute of Technology on Friday afternoon. The Scots outscored their opponents 19-0 during the two games and improved to 2-2 in Commonwealth Coast Conference play entering a weekend matchup with the University of New England.
Two days after struggling to get the offense going against Curry, the Fighting Scots put up their most impressive outing of the season. Starting pitcher Skylar Bareford (Stoningington, Conn.) held the Leopards to a one-two-three innings in the first, opening up a chance for the Scots to grab the early lead.
Junior Rachel Ryder (Telford, Pa.) launched the third pitch she saw over the fence in left-center field to lead off the bottom half of the first inning. Ryder's solo shot was the first ball to leave the yard this season and gave the Fighting Scots a 1-0 lead.
The very next batter, Marissa Meenan (Wayne, Pa.), hit the ball over the head of WIT's right fielder and scooted all the way to third. Meenan scored on the next play when Bareford reached base on a dropped ball in the outfield. Gordon capped off the inning when cleanup hitter Kara Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J.) hit the second round-tripper of the inning, a two-run shot to left field.
Bareford took a perfect game into the fourth inning and by then the Scots had opened up an 8-0 lead. Ryder and Stephanie Zaloom (Albany, N.Y.) had RBI knocks in the bottom of the third. The Leopards broke the senior captain's bid for perfection when they earned a walk and a single to begin the fourth inning. Still, Gordon was able to get out of the inning unscathed.
The Scots added another run in the bottom of the fourth to make it a nine-run game and Bareford held the Leopards' offense in check for a 9-0 win in five innings.
Game Two
Gordon (5-9) began the nightcap the same way they ended the first, with plenty of run production from the offense. Ryder doubled to begin the game and was escorted home by Meenan on a throwing error by the Leopards' third baseman. Bareford earned a walk before Pepper brought both players home with an RBI-double to the wall. Pepper got caught in a pickle between second and third—allowing Bareford to cross home plate—and was thrown out sliding back into second.
The Scots loaded the bases to begin the bottom half of the second inning due to two walks and an error. With the bases juiced, Meenan timed a pitch perfectly and sent a ball that just got over the fence in left field for a grand slam.
Gordon loaded the bases again later in the inning and scored on a hit-by-pitch to make it 8-0.
Wentworth struggled to get anything going against Bareford during her nine innings of work over the course of two games. After allowing just one hit in game one, the senior only gave up three hits in the second game and Wentworth never threatened to break the drought.
The Scots scored twice in the bottom of the fourth on a pair of errors and completed the sweep with a 10-0 win in game two. Bareford picked up two wins, improving to 4-9 on the mound this season. Sam Curran and Haylee Bacik were credited for the losses for the Leopards.
Curran led the way for the Leopards' offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate while also earning a four-pitch walk.
Gordon travels to UNE tomorrow afternoon for a 3 p.m. start, which had been moved from noon due to weather. Wentworth will look to get back on track with a home doubleheader versus Roger Williams on Saturday at noon. ?
