Women's Soccer Rebounds with 6-0 Triumph in Classic Finale

Box Score WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon Women's Soccer rebounded from a tough season opener, defeating the University of Southern Maine 6-0 in the conclusion of the inaugural Gordon Soccer Classic. After being held scoreless on Friday afternoon, Gordon exploded for three goals in each half, including two scores each for Lauren Hayes (Wantage, N.J.) and freshman Naomi Shearer (Hampden, Maine).

Both the Fighting Scots and the Huskies sought after the important first win of the season in the final game of the Gordon Soccer Classic. Southern Maine lost a hard-fought 2-0 contest to WPI under the lights on Friday night, while Gordon was blanked 4-0 by Maine-Fort Kent. The Fighting Scots took the first step toward securing a victory at 3:39 in the first half, when Hayes spun a Shearer feed into the left corner of the net.

Shearer joined the scoring less than two minutes later, when Jamie Breton (Concord, N.H.) found her by the penalty stripe. Shearer caught the Marissa Temple slightly out of position and hooked a shot just past her finger tips for the 2-0 lead. Kara Dry (Madison, Conn.) made it a three-goal advantage in the 18th minute on a failed clear by the Huskies' defense. Dry had time in the middle of the field and launched a low line drive to the left side of the goal. Temple sprawled across the goal line, nearly saving the attempt, but the ball took one skip into the twine.

Neither team was able to find the net for the remainder of the half, although Gordon pressed for an insurance goal for the final 30 minutes.

Shearer scored her second career goal just 12 minutes into the second stanza off an Olivia Balloveras (Freeport, N.Y.) pass up the seam. Shearer beat her defender in the middle of the field and chipped the ball over the approaching keeper for the fourth goal of the game for Gordon.

Hayes entertained her second score of the game on a strike in the 86th minute on a centered ball from freshman Jordan Van Althuis (Sherburne, N.Y.). Christina Martin (San Diego, Calif.) added the sixth and final goal of the contest on an arching strike from the right side. Martin slid into a ball just inside the 18-yard box and put it just over the head of Temple to the right corner.

McKenzie Dion (North Grafton, Mass.) earned the win, making two saves in the process. Temple made 12 saves for a total of 30 on the weekend, taking the loss for the second consecutive day. Freshman keeper Emmalee Sloman (Oneonta, N.Y.) played nearly 30 minutes in relief of Dion and made two key stops, including a diving save on a penalty kick late in the game.

Gordon is back in action on Wednesday at WPI in Worcester beginning at 7 p.m. Southern Maine is off until next Friday when they travel to Thomas College for another two-day tournament.
