Match ResultsNEW LONDON, N.H. —The Gordon Women's Tennis team suffered a 7-2 defeat at the hands of two-time defending NEAC champion Colby-Sawyer. The Fighting Scots found wins at first doubles and sixth singles, but fell on the wrong side of several close matches in the middle of the lineup.
The Chargers (1-1) will play at Colby with Thomas next Saturday. Gordon (0-1) travels to Bridgewater on Thursday for a 4:00 p.m. match.
Colby-Sawyer took a 2-1 advantage in the match after doubles play. Ellen Graham (Newburyport, Mass.) and Christine Hill (Wallingford, Conn.) put the home team on the board with an 8-2 victory over Abby Caron (Bedford, N.H.) and Alexa Didomizio (Mahwah, N.J.) at No. 3. Ashley Woodside (Hampden, Maine) and Lauren Blanchard (Agawam, Mass.) teamed for their first collegiate victory at No. 2 doubles. They defeated Lily Drescher (Reading, Mass.) and Nathalia Moran (Lake Villa, Ill.) 8-4. The Scots came away with an 8-6 victory at the top doubles spot. Freshman Sophie Linnell (Richmond, Va.) and junior captain Tawnie Yeaw (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) defeated Ashlyn Ramsay (Barkhamstead, Conn.) and Sam White (Stockbridge, Mass.) in their first match playing together.
White quickly gave Colby-Sawyer a 3-1 lead with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles over Drescher. Woodside then followed suit with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Linnell at the No. 2 spot. The clinching point of the match came from Lauren Blanchard at No. 5, where she defeated Moran 7-5, 6-3.
The first, fourth and sixth flights each went to a third set. Colby-Sawyer's Ramsay and Hill each dropped their first sets, but rebounded for match victories at the top and fourth flights, respectively. Gordon's Didomizio registered the lone singles victory for the visitors. After dropping the first set 6-4, she rebounded nicely with convincing 6-1, 6-2 second and third set wins.
