Lions No Match for Women's Tennis


QUINCY, Mass.- Gordon Women's Tennis got back into the win column with a dominating 9-0 over rival Eastern Nazarene on Saturday afternoon. Captains Tawnie Yeaw (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) and Lily Drescher (Reading, Mass.) each picked up two wins on the day to improve the Fighting Scots to 3-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference and 3-4 overall.
 
After losing their first match of the year against Endicott on Wednesday, top duo Yeaw and Sophie Linnell (Richmond, Va.) breezed past ENC rookies Jordan Cressman (Bowmanstown, Pa.) and Lindsey Steelman (Darlington, Md.), 8-1.
 
Tressa Burrello (Herkimer, N.Y.) and Alecia Tubbs (Rochester, N.Y.) absorbed an 8-1 loss to Drescher and Abby Caron (Bedford, N.H.) at the second doubles spot. Bethany Mohnkern (Petersburg, Pa.) and Hannah Lariviere (Biddeford, Maine) fell to Gordon freshman Nathalia Moran (Lake Villa, Ill.) and Alexa DiDomizio (Mahwah, N.J.) 8-1 in the third doubles match.
 
In singles competition, Yeaw quickly dispatched ENC freshman Steelman without dropping a game, while Linnell got the best of Burello in straight sets (6-0, 6-2). Cressman endured a 6-1, 6-1 setback at the third singles position to Drescher and Liann Van Volkinburg stayed undefeated on the season with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 win in the fourth flight.
 
Haley Bean (Trumbull, Conn.) joined Yeaw in not dropping a game in her first singles action this fall and freshman Madeline Berry (Paso Robles, Calif.) made her Gordon debut with a 6-2, 6-1 win at sixth singles over Julie Sutton.
 
Gordon stays in conference play on Tuesday when they play host to 2013 regular season champion Nichols College at 4 p.m.
