Match Box ScoreWENHAM, Mass.—Gordon College Women's Tennis fell to a strong Nichols College squad at the Brigham Tennis Courts on Tuesday afternoon. Last year's Commonwealth Coast Conference runner-ups swept both the doubles and singles lineups for the 9-0 win—the first time Gordon has not gotten at least one point this fall.
The Bison got the scoring started at second doubles where Lindsay Benoit (Holden, Mass.) and Cristina Szepanski (Windsor Locks, Conn.) managed an 8-1 win. Alanna Judd (Westborough, Mass.) and Lauren Candia (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) registered Nichols' second point of the day at first doubles with a narrow victory over
Tawnie Yeaw (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) and Sophie Linnell (Richmond, Va.), 8-5.
Gordon looked like the would pull out a point at third doubles, but Ashley Dallaire (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and Daniela Saldarriaga (Medellin, Colombia) won the final five games of the match to take a 9-7 victory.
Nichols clinched the match with two quick straight-set wins at fourth and fifth singles. Dallaire earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory at fifth singles over
Nathalia Moran (Villa Lake, Ill.) and Candia finished off
Abby Caron (Bedford, N.H.) 6-1, 6-2. Yeaw was able to get two games in the first set, but Judd blanked the Gordon junior in the second and final set for the sixth point.
Benoit defeated
Lily Drescher (Reading, Mass.) 6-1, 6-3 at third singles, while Emma Carey (Venice, Fla.) grinded out a 6-3, 6-1 win at the sixth flight. Gordon freshman Linnell was able to force a third-set tiebreaker with Szepanski at second singles, but the hard-hitting sophomore pulled out the convincing victory with a 10-5 mark in the final set.
Gordon returns to non-conference action on Thursday when they host North Shore Cup opponent Salem State.
