Scots Turn Back Pilgrims with Second-Half Scores

WENHAM, Mass.—Goals scored by a pair of upperclassmen early in the second half spurred Gordon Women's Soccer past non-conference rival New England College, 2-0, on Wednesday afternoon. The Fighting Scots peppered the Pilgrim's goal in the first half to no avail, but Taylor McSherry's (Wolcott, Conn.) score less than two minutes into the final half gave them a lead they would never relinquish.

A long history of close battles between the two schools was expected to continue on a cool fall afternoon on the Quad. The two squads entered the afternoon with a combined record of 13-3, with the losses happening to high-quality opponents. A tug of war for possession began from the opening whistle and play continued in the middle third of the field for much of the first 10 minutes of regulation.

Gordon was finally able to put pressure on the Pilgrims' defense just inside of the 10-minute mark when Jamie Breton (Concord, N.H.) sent a shot just wide of the post. Breton had another opportunity just three minutes later, but again sent it wide of the mark due to a deflection. The Fighting Scots racked up four more shots and three corners in the span of nine minutes, but Tricia Sardagnoia (Shrewsbury, Mass.) came up with three consecutive stops to keep Gordon from scoring. Two such chances were right in front of the net with unmarked Gordon players, but Sardagnoia was able to jump on the ball each time.

NEC was able to flip the field on the Fighting Scots for much of the next 10 minutes, earning two corners during the stretch. A header by Kaylee Thrasher (Candia, N.H.) looked like it might have a chance at the left post, but her attempt went just wide.

The Fighting Scots dominated possession for the final 15 minutes of the half, but their advances were stopped in their tracks each time down the field. Gordon held a 12-3 advantage in shots in the first half, but Sardagnoia saved all four on target.

Gordon pressed the Pilgrims immediately out of the gate in the second half, earning a corner kick just 90 seconds in. Kaelyn Silveira (Bristol, R.I.) sent a perfect cross from the corner flag that landed right at the feet of McSherry. The Fighting Scots senior one-timed the ball, sending it low and out of reach of Sardagnoia for the go ahead goal.

The Fighting Scots were back at it only five minutes later as a long pass up the middle created confusion in the NEC defensive half. The first two shots by Hannah Midwinter (Barkhamstead, Conn.) and McSherry were saved by Sardagnoia, but Breton was able to put home the deflection from McSherry's attempt for the insurance score. The goal was Breton's first of the season.

New England College attempted to counter the other way several times in the final 30 minutes of play, but only one chance warranted a good look. Caroline Mols (Verona, N.J.) attempted a free-kick from about 20-yards away that made it's way past the wall and straight to the gut of McKenzie Dion (North Grafton, Mass.).

Dion made two saves on the day, while Sardagnoia finished with seven in the loss. Gordon outshot the Pilgrims 19-5 on the afternoon and earned seven corners compared to three for NEC.

The Pilgrims fall to 7-2 on the season and return to action on Saturday when they play host to Colby-Sawyer at 5 p.m. Gordon improves to 7-2 in 2014 and have an important Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup at Western New England on Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
