Match Box ScoreWENHAM, Mass.—A handful of three-set matches all turned in the favor of the Fighting Scots Women's Tennis team and Gordon handed a North Shore Cup loss to visiting Salem State on Thursday evening. With the match still on the line, Gordon's
Lily Drescher (Reading, Mass.),
Nathalia Moran (Lake Villa, Ill.) and
Liann Van Volkinburg (Chillicothe, Ohio) all gutted out nail-biters to bring the Scots even in the North Shore Cup standings.
Â
Gordon started out fast with a quick 8-2 win at second doubles thanks to a strong performance by Drescher and partner
Abby Caron (Bedford, N.H.). The first doubles combo of
Tawnie Yeaw (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) and Sophie Linnell (Richmond, Va.) fell behind early to Jennifer Cleary (Swampscott, Mass.) and April McDermott (Tewksbury, Mass.) at 3-2. However the Scots top flight won six of the final eight games in the match to pull out an 8-5 win.
Â
The Vikings got a point back at third doubles where Emily Yanchun (Saugus, Mass.) and Lauren Woods (Burlington, Mass.) handed Moran and
Alexa DiDomizio (Mahwah, N.J.) a tough 8-6 loss.
Â
Gordon stormed to four overall match points with straight-set win at second and fourth singles. Linnell used a 6-1, 6-1 win to get past McDermott at two, while Caron continued her strong play in singles with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Hillary Gustafson (Belchertown, Mass.). However, Salem State registered a point at first singles with Cleary getting past Yeaw 7-5, 6-2 to make things interesting.
Â
The final three matches on the court all split the first two sets played and made for a thrilling finish. Van Volkinburg clinched the victory at sixth singles after dropping the first set and won 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Drescher quickly followed suit with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at third singles. Moran was able to come back from three games down in the final frame by winning five consecutive games to clinch a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 marathon over Kat Troisi (Lynn, Mass.).
Â
Salem State has a week off before returning to Little East play at home against Plymouth State. Gordon has the weekend to rest before an important conference match at Curry on Monday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.Â
