Dry's Heroics Lead Scots Past Engineers in Double Overtime

Box Score
WORCESTER, Mass.—Kara Dry (Madison, Conn.) converted a 21-yard direct kick with 1:32 left in the second overtime as Gordon defeated host WPI, 1-0, in a non-conference women's soccer tilt on Wednesday evening at Alumni Stadium.

It was the second consecutive year the two schools went to double overtime to settle the score. The Engineers used a second-half rally before coming up with a late goal 3-2 in Wenham. This time around it was a Scot who stood up to the challenge.

After 90 minutes of action, WPI held a slim 10-8 edge in shots while each team took four in the extra sessions. Gordon had one of the better opportunities before the game-ender when Hannah Midwinter (Barkhamsted, Conn.) dribbled the ball into the box and made a pair of nifty moves before launching a bid that went high in the 105th minute.

Jaime Espinola (Greensboro, N.C.) had a one-on-one chance in the 11th minute but Gordon goalkeeper McKenzie Dion (North Grafton, Mass.) swatted the ball up and over the crossbar. Jamie Breton's (Concord, N.H.) shot from the top of the box went left in the 38th minute. One minute later, WPI's Lynn Renner (Aberdeen, S.D.) booted a ball just above the crossbar.

Late in the second half, Breton's shot went wide amidst a flurry of activity in the box. Moments later, Gordon had another bid denied by the post when Taylor McSherry's (Wolcott, Conn.) shot caromed off the left post in the waning seconds of regulation.

WPI's Abbey Teliska (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) stopped a pair of shots while Dion made nine stops, including two in overtime.

For the game, WPI held advantages in shots (14-12) and corner kicks (6-4).
