Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Taylor McSherry (Wolcott, Conn.) broke a tie game in the 78
th minute and the Gordon College Women's Soccer team held on to beat host Emerson 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Fighting Scots overcame a first-half deficit and some atypical September heat to close out their third consecutive win in the last week.
The first half saw the Lions set the pace in the first half of play as the fired off four shots at the Fighting Scots with Alyssa Giannone placing a perfect textbook cross into the box that Mollie Coyne found to one touch into the left corner to take a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute of play. Emerson held off GC nearly for the rest of the half until Mary Catherine Aston (New York, N.Y.) set up Chandler Stier (Redlands, Calif.) who was able to push one just past Allie Altman to send the teams into the half tied 1-1.
The Fighting Scots (3-1) dominated the second half, as they targeted the Lions' goal 13 times and forced keeper Allie Altman to make five stops in the latter stages. Jamie Breton (Concord, N.H.) and Olivia Balloveras (Freeport, N.Y.) each almost gave the Scots the lead midway through the second half, but Altman came up big both times. The difference maker for the Scots came in the 78th minute of play as Hannah Midwinter (Barkhamstead) put up a cross that McSherry turned and cranked into the top left corner for the 2-1 final.
McKenzie Dion (North Grafton, Mass.) stopped four shots, two in each period and held on for her third win of the year in goal. Altman fell to 0-3.
The Lions will hit the road next as they travel to Mount Ida on Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. matchup against the Mustangs in Newton, Mass. Gordon continues its lengthy road trip on Wednesday when they take on Colby-Sawyer in New London, N.H. at 4 p.m. The Chargers currently sit at 1-2 on the season with a win over Norwich University last Wednesday.
