MILTON, Mass.—Host Curry College remained undefeated in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with a 59-31 win over the Fighting Scots. The Colonels received an efficient 23-point effort from Kylie Beltz (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) and held the Scots to only 11 points in the second half to pull away. Gordon drops to 0-5 in the CCC.
The Colonels found their groove from the opening whistle, thanks to a 9-of-14 shooting performance by Beltz. Minus starting guard
Olivia Vetere (Mahopac, N.Y.), the shorthanded Scots had to look to its bench to replace her scoring. After an early 15-6 run, Gordon's
Kristen Smith (Littleton, Mass.) scored back-to-back buckets to bring the Scots back within five points.
Gordon could only muster 10 points over the final 13 minutes of the first half, as Curry was able to expand its lead back to 10 by the end of the first half.
Sophie Linnell's (Richmond, Va.) late scoring spurt made her the leading scorer for Gordon with seven points in the first half.
The second half proved even tougher for the Scots, as
Brooke Kratche (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) scored eight of the 11 points scored by Gordon in the final period. The Colonels outscored Gordon by 18 points in the second half and finished with an impressive 49-percent shooting mark for the entire game. Gordon shot just south of 30 percent.
The Colonels were able to outrebound Gordon 40-21 in the game, including 13 offensive boards which helped contribute 10 second chance points. The Fighting Scots were able to limit their turnovers and force Curry into a game-high 21, but a tough shooting performance held the offense back.
Kratche was the leading scorer for Gordon with 11 points, while Linnell added nine points and a team-high six rebounds.
Gordon (2-10) will look to get its first conference win of the season on Saturday when Salve Regina comes to town for a 1 p.m. tip.
