Gulls Sneak Out 5-4 Match to Claim Top Seed

BEVERLY, Mass.—Endicott snuck out a 5-4 win over Gordon in a battle of unbeaten conference teams in women's tennis action on Thursday afternoon. The Gulls won a swing match at second doubles and split singles competition with the Scots to take the close rivalry matchup.

The Fighting Scots looked sharp at first singles, as Abbie Denney (Peoria, Ariz.) and Tawnie Yeaw (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) blanked their opponents. Endicott evened the score with an 8-2 win at third doubles. Gordon held a slight advantage at second doubles at the midway point of the match, but Endicott's duo found a rhythm to take the final five games and a 2-1 overall advantage.

The Gulls' Hayley Barnett gave her squad a two-point lead with a straight-set win at first singles. The match marked the first conference loss for the Gordon freshman, Denney. Justine Hanson (Meadow Vista, Calif.) brought the Fighting Scots back with a straight-set win of her own, at second singles. Hanson remained undefeated in singles action this year.

Maxine Bergstein brought Endicott within one point of an overall win by beating Abby Caron (Bedford, N.H.) 7-5, 6-2. Katherine Jeffreys (Parkton, Md.) kept Gordon's hopes alive, however, with a 7-5, 6-2 victory. The Gordon sophomore trailed 5-2 in the first set, but took home 11 of the final 13 games to beat Margot Andreasen.

With two matches still on the court, Endicott ended the match with two-set win for Mackenzie Rhodes. The Endicott junior staved off Lily Drescher (Reading, Mass.) in a first set tiebreaker, 7-5, and battled for a 6-2 win in the second set.

Yeaw closed out the match with an impressive three-setter over Reilly Fitzgibbons.

Gordon closes out its conference schedule on Saturday with a Homecoming matchup against Eastern Nazarene.
