WENHAM, Mass.—Eastern Nazarene's Lauren Hevy (North Brookfield, Mass.) headed a ball in with 25 seconds remaining in the second half to end a 1-1 tie and gave the Lions a big conference road win. Gordon falls to 3-5-3 and 1-3-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference, while ENC improves to 5-6-1 and 2-3 in the CCC.
Gordon opened the scoring in the 18
th minute when Lauren Hayes (Wantage, N.J.) finished off a deflected ball. Tori Caswell (Uxbridge, Mass.) offered an initial attempt that was stopped by Kristen Farley (Westminster, Mass.), but Hayes came sweeping into put the Scots on the scoreboard.
Eastern Nazarene flipped the script on the Scots over the next few minutes, by putting three shots near the goal in a one-minute span. Off of a corner kick, Justine Buchanan (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) was able to pick off a failed clear and poke it into the net for the equalizer in the 26
th minute.
The Fighting Scots had several good opportunities on breaks late in the second half, but each time the Lions defense was able to recover at the very last moment. Farley also came up with a pair of big stops to prevent Gordon from going back up a goal.
Hevy's header in the closing minute was Eastern Nazarene's only shot on goal in the second frame, but it ended up as the difference. Katherine Lawrence (Marlborough, Conn.) snuck past her defender on a counter play from the right side and put a beautiful ball over the middle. Hevy was standing right in the six-yard box and knocked it home.
Gordon outshot ENC 13-10 for the game and 7-5 on goal. Farley made six saves in the game, while McKenzie Dion (North Grafton, Mass.) was credited with two. Gordon also made one team save.
The Scots return to non-conference action on Wednesday with Worcester State at home. The Lions have an entire week to rest before hosting Salve Regina next Saturday morning.
