BIDDEFORD, Maine —
Jill Kefalas (Wenham, Mass.) scored with 8:10 elapsed in overtime to provide the sixth-seeded Gordon College Fighting Scots with a 2-1 win over third-seeded University of New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference Women's Soccer Championship quarterfinal-round game Saturday afternoon (Oct. 31) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
Gordon (6-8-3) advances to Wednesday's semifinal round and will travel to No. 2 Wentworth Institute of Technology, a 4-0 winner over Curry College. The Nor'easters (11-7-0) await word on a potential Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Championship bid.
Kefalas' golden goal came on a corner kick.
Jamie Breton (Concord, N.H.) put the ball in play from the left corner with a high service in front of the goal. The ball came down in a crowd, and Kefalas was able to get a foot on it and direct a high shot into the center of the goal.
UNE, which controlled play for the majority of the match, had grabbed a 1-0 lead just 4:53 into the contest when Jackie Dickerson (Windham, N.H.) received a pass from Jessica Meader (Scarborough, Maine), maneuvered her way into the box, and sent a high shot inside the near right post.
Gordon drew even in the 23rd minute when a cross from the right corner by
Kiersten Klose (Concord, N.H.) deflected off the foot of a UNE defender into the net.
The Nor'easters, who led 25-9 in shots on the day, had multiple near-misses in the second half, including a pair of offerings less than two minutes apart from Devon Wolfenden (East Longmeadow, Mass.) -- one of which hit the post and the other connected with the crossbar.
McKenzie Dion (North Grafton, Mass.) had a busy day in goal for the Fighting Scots, recording a total of 14 saves. Brielle Robinson (Monson, Mass.) had three stops for UNE.
