Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Scots Catch Mustangs at Final Turn

WENHAM, Mass.—For the second game in a row, Gordon Women's Basketball used a big fourth-quarter run to handle a non-conference opponent. The Fighting Scots outscored visiting Mount Ida 20-8 over the final 10 minutes of play to notch a 66-56 victory at the Bennett Center on Tuesday evening.

The Fighting Scots improve to 2-0 entering this weekend's Gordon College Classic, when the team will host Lesley, New England College and Wentworth. The Mustangs suffer their third consecutive defeat to begin the 2015-16 campaign, sitting at 0-3.

Mount Ida's combination of inside-outside scoring gave the Fighting Scots fits in the early stages. Forwards Brittany Crosby (Riverside, R.I.) and Angelique Martinez (Taunton, Mass.) worked tirelessly on the glass, which gave Mount Ida several second-chance opportunities and the Mustangs capitalized.

The Mustangs raced out to a 11-4 lead halfway through the opening quarter and a 13-8 advantage with two minutes to play. Gordon's Ashley Theriault (Ludlow, Mass.) gave the Scots some life on offense to cut it to a two-point lead and Jamie Tafoya (Fort Collins, Colo.) tied it just before the end of the first at 13 apiece.

Gordon grabbed its first lead of the game right out of the gate in the second quarter when first-year Sydney Pefanis (Cumming, Ga.) drained an open jumper from deep. After traded buckets from Mount Ida's Katlyn Jesse (Marshfield, Mass.) and Gordon's Sophie Linnell (Richmond, Va.) made it a one-point lead for the Scots, Mount Ida went on a 12-2 run over a three-minute span.

Breanne Muir (Wareham, Mass.) put her team on her back with threes on consecutive times down the floor as a part of the big run.

Mount Ida led 29-20 approaching the half when Gordon made a final push before the break. The Scots scored the final six points of the period, including a pair of important free throws from Olivia Stark (Arvada, Colo.) to make it a 29-26 game at halftime.

The Mustangs grew its lead back to five points midway through the third quarter, but back-to-back threes from senior Mariel Barner (Colorado Springs, Colo.) got the crowd back on its feet with a 41-40 game in Gordon's favor.

Once again, Mount Ida battled back to take a 46-41 lead with only a minute to play in the third quarter. A three-point play the old fashioned way by Tafoya cut back into he deficit and Gordon trailed 48-46 after three frames.

Linnell made a layup with 6:46 to go in the final quarter to tie the game at 50 and set an 8-0 run in order, capped off by a made jumper from Stark. Gordon never trailed again.

The Mustangs crept back within four points at one stage, but Gordon closed things out with some timely scoring down the stretch.

Jesse led Mount Ida with 19 points as a starter. Martinez was near dominant at times for the Mustangs, while contributing 14 points and 18 rebounds. She also blocked three shots. Muir was the only other player in double-figures for the Mustangs with 12 points and four steals. Crosby finished with 13 boards.

Linnell bounced back from a quiet first game with 14 points and 10 caroms. She also led the team in assists from the low post with four. Barner was the next best scorer for the Scots with 10 points off the bench in 15 minutes of play. Kristen Smith (Littleton, Mass.) and Jess Ryan (Milford, N.H.) both had eight points.

The biggest story of the game was Gordon's bench outscoring Mount Ida's 27-2 for the game. The Mustangs scored 26 points off turnovers.

Mount Ida is back in action on Thursday with a trip down to Rhode Island to take on Division I opponent, Brown. Gordon will play Lesley at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night before hosting New England College at 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
