Hawks Fly Past Scots 73-38

BRISTOL, R.I.—Roger Williams opened up a big lead in the first quarter and never looked back en route to a 73-38 win over Gordon College on Saturday afternoon. The Scots struggled in the possession game for the second straight contest in Commonwealth Coast Conference play, falling to 0-2 in the conference. Roger Williams evened its ledger at 4-4 and 1-1 in the CCC.

Freshman Jess Ryan (Milford, N.H.) gave Gordon its only lead of the game in the opening minute when she drained an open triple. Ryan led the Fighting Scots with 10 points for the game and outscored the rest of Gordon's starting lineup by herself. Roger Williams played solid defense on starters Kristen Smith (Littleton, Mass.) and Jamie Tafoya (Fort Collins, Colo.) by holding them to 1-for-9 from the field for four total points. Both players were averaging double-figures entering the game.

The Scots fell behind early as Roger Williams scored 20 points in just five minutes and the Hawks held a 27-13 advantage after one quarter. The hosts extended their lead to 45-24 at the halftime after shooting 44.1-percent from the field.

Gordon was unable to get much going in the second half either as turnovers foiled its rhythm in the comeback attempt. The Hawks forced 24 turnovers, while only committing 14 of their own.

Other than Ryan's 10 points, the Fighting Scots were aided by 10 points from reserve guard Olivia Stark (Arvada, Colo.). Stark, Olivia Vetere (Mahopac, N.Y.) and Kaelyn Hall (Sugar Land, Texas) all gave Gordon good minutes off the bench, combining to score more than the starting five. Hall also had four blocks and four rebounds.

The Scots fall to 3-4 on the year after a hot 3-0 start. They will look to get back to their winning ways on Tuesday when they travel to Quincy to take on Eastern Nazarene at 5 p.m.
