Fighting Scots Show Well at Colby-Sawyer

NEW LONDON, N.H.—Gordon Men's Swimming had its best finish of the season with a second-place showing at the Colby-Sawyer Invite on Saturday afternoon. The Scot women were edged for second place by the hosts and settled for third in the event.
 
Gordon kicked off the day with a top finish in the men's 200 Medley Relay. Jack Cicchelli (Middletown, R.I.), Josh Florez (West Hartford, Conn.), Dan Fauber (Granbury, Texas) and Dean Drukker (Bedford, N.H.) combined for a time of 1:44.60, which put them four seconds ahead of the next best team.
 
Drukker added a second-place finish in the individual 200 Free a few events later to earn the Scots 13 points, while Florez got Gordon its first individual gold in the 100 Breast with a near dominant performance in the sprint. Fauber made it two wins in a row with an easy victory in the 200 Fly, beating the second-place finisher by over 20 seconds.
 
Fauber got another win in the 200 Backstroke, again by a significant margin over second place. Florez also joined the double-win club by sweeping the Breaststroke events with a 19-second victory in the 200-yard variety.
 
UMass-Dartmouth led for most of the day and put up 419.5 points for first place. The Fighting Scots had a comfortable lead in second place with 322, while the host Chargers took home third at 239.5. UNE managed only 54 points on the men's side.
 
After cruising through much of the first part of the season, the Gordon women met some stiff competition at the four-team event. UNE took victories in most of event on its way to a whopping 506 points on the day. Colby-Sawyer just passed the Scots with 295 points, while Gordon took third at 268. Western New England grabbed 205 points.
 
Freshman Caris Lyons (Orrville, Ohio) put forth a strong showing in the 200 Free with a time of 2:07.14. Five athletes finished within two seconds of each other, including the winner in a time of 2:06.25. Emily David (No. Kingston, R.I.) grabbed 13 points with a second-place result in the 200 Fly. David later added another silve finish in the 100 Fly.
 
Senior Nicole St. Martin (Westport, Mass.) provided Gordon with its only outright win of the afternoon with a close victory in the 500 Free over Elaine Miller of Colby-Sawyer.
 
Gordon is off until after the holidays when they head down to Florida to take on Division II Rollins on January 6th.
