Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Gordon Ends Campaign with Loss at ENC

QUINCY, Mass.—Gordon Women's Basketball closed out its 2014-15 campaign with a 65-50 loss on the road at Eastern Nazarene on Saturday afternoon. Brooke Kratche (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) led the Fighting Scots with 17 points and nine rebounds while wearing a Gordon uniform for the final time. The Lions' Mhiah Vickers (Westlake Village, Calif.) led all scorers with 18 points and paced the ENC defense with four steals and four blocks.

The Fighting Scots close out the season 3-22 and 1-17 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference, while Eastern Nazarene clinched the fifth seed in next week's CCC tournament with a 10-8 conference record.

The Lions opened the game with plenty of energy, as they did in the first matchup between the two teams at the Bennett Center in January. Nicole Greer (Odenton, Md.) and Vickers combined for eight points over the first four minutes as a part of a 10-0 run to open the game.

ENC's advantage teetered between seven and nine points until the midway point of the half when Gordon converted on three consecutive layups by Kratche, Mariel Barner (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Sophie Linnell (Richmond, Va.) to close it to 17-14. Olivia Vetere (Mahopac, N.Y.) closed the Lions' lead even further to 21-19 on a jumper with 5:56 remaining in the opening period.

After ENC took a 28-25 lead with 2:17 to go in the first half, the Lions stormed to an 11-1 run up until the break. A costly turnover led to six quick points for the Lions during the final possession of the first half, allowing them to balloon their lead to 39-26 at intermission.

Gordon could not cut the lead below double-digits in the second half, as the Lions wrapped up a season sweep of the Fighting Scots.

Kratche's near double-double caps off a fantastic career in which she scored 1,252 total points—good enough for seventh on the all-time list. Gordon's lone senior also led the Scots with four assists in the loss.

Kristen Smith (Littleton, Mass.) and Linnell wrapped up solid freshmen seasons with 11 and 10 points respectively. Linnell finished as Gordon's leading rebounder with 8.5 per game, which was tied for third in the CCC. She corralled six rebounds and four steals in the game. Smith averaged 8.3 points per game during her first season in navy, which was third highest on the squad.

Defending Co-Player of the Week, Vickers, stuffed the statsheet for the Lions with 18 points, eight rebounds, six assists, four blocks and four steals. Her only negative stat on the day was committing eight turnovers. Frontcourt player Elia Salazar (Los Angeles, Calif.) put up 12 points, while Courtney Houston (Santa Barbara, Calif.) added 10 off the bench.
