DUDLEY, Mass.—Host Nichols edged Women's Basketball in each half, completing a season sweep of the Fighting Scots, 53-44. Junior
Olivia Vetere (Mahopac, N.Y.) scored 14 points to pace Gordon, but Nichols' strength on the offensive glass led to 27 more shots for the Bison to secure the victory. Gordon falls to 3-17 on the year and 1-12 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.
Gordon took command of the game over the first 10 minutes and looked well on its way to getting the Bison back for a home loss in December. The Fighting Scots scored 11 of the first 13 points scored in the game and held the Bison to only two points through 11 minutes of play. Nichols was finally able to break through with six straight points by Amber Litwinko (Berlin, Conn.) in a 45-second span with just under nine to play in the opening stanza.
After Vetere hit a key triple to put the lead back up to six points, the Bison would score 13 of the next 17 points to take their first lead of the game at the 3:53 mark. Nichols' Taylor Daniels (Dudley, Mass.) make two deep balls in the final four minutes and the Bison were able to take a 27-20 lead into halftime.
Gordon was never quite able to recover from the late run, as Nichols took as large as a 12-point lead in the second period. The Fighting Scots cut the deficit to four on a Jenna Olson (Rutland, Vt.) free throw with 12 minutes and change to go in regulation. That would be the closet the Scots would get for the remainder of the contest, as the Bison completed two more lengthy runs to eventually reclaim a double-digit lead late.
Litwinko led all scorers with 17 points and added 10 rebounds for the double-double effort. Brooke Packard (Dudley, Mass.) also had a strong effort with 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Daniels pitched in 11 off the bench with most of her points coming during the first-half run. Jessica Kelliher (Marshfield, Mass.) dished out five assists, while Allison Cerrato (Rockland, Mass.) and Alexis Wegrzynek (Wilbraham, Mass.) combined for 17 boards.
As a team, Nichols wrangled in 19 offensive rebounds, an season-high given up by the Fighting Scots.
Vetere led the Scots with 14 points and eight rebounds, team highs in both categories. Freshman
Kristen Smith (Littleton, Mass.) was the second leading scorer with 10 points, but no other Gordon player managed more than seven points. After scoring a season-low six points against Western New England,
Brooke Kratche (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) only attempted eight shots for seven points.
Gordon was uncharacteristically poor from the charity stripe, making only half of its 26 attempts on the evening.
The Fighting Scots return to the comfort of the Bennett Center on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tip with Curry.
