SALEM, Mass.—Salem State completed a game one comeback in the final inning, helping them to a sweep of Gordon Softball on Tuesday evening. The Fighting Scots dropped both North Shore Cup games at the hands of the Vikings, 5-4 and 9-1.
Game OneGordon quickly got to work as they tallied three runs in first inning on three hits.
Kara Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J.) knocked in two runs with a triple that scored
Emily Burkhart (Manheim, Pa.) and
Rachel Ryder (Telford, Pa.).
Emily Kline (Park Ridge, N.J.) brought in Pepper with a ground ball to the shortstop whose throw was late to beat Pepper to the plate. In the second inning, the Vikings cut the deficit to 3-2 after Desiree Moreno (Ashburnham, Mass.) brought in Jenn Toussaint (Reading, Mass.). Toussaint led off the inning with a triple that was followed by a Bobbie Dee Regan (Lynn, Mass.) single.
The Fighting Scots added one in the top of the fifth when Kline's single scored Pepper, who doubled earlier that inning. However, in the bottom of the inning Salem State scored two runs that tied the game at 4-4 after five innings of play. Marisa Sanchez (Framingham, Mass.) singled, and then scored on the next at bat after Gordon third basemen
Sarah Ryder (Telford, Pa.) committed a costly throwing error off a Raymond grounder. Raymond also scored that inning due to a fielder's choice.
The Vikings sealed a 5-4 victory in the bottom of the seventh when Raymond scored from third on a wild pitch.
Megan Black pitched 4.2 innings and allowed eight hits and four runs. Perrault came on in the fifth to close out the game as she pitched 2.1 innings as she let up only two hits and fanned three batters.
Abigail Knowlton (Deer Isle, Maine) pitched a solid five innings for Gordon, allowing four runs off six hit, but only was credited with two earned runs due to fielding errors. Perrault earned her fifth win to enhance her record to 5-1 while Knowlton moves to 0-8.
Game TwoSalem State exploded for five runs in the bottom of the third, including a Toussaint two-run homer, marking her fourth of the season. The next inning the Vikings' pushed their lead to 9-0 after scoring three runs. Regan led Salem State in the fourth with a two-run double that put the nail in the coffin.
The Fighting Scots did get one back as Burkhart singled, bringing in
Alyssa Unumb (Bedford, Mass.) but it wasn't enough as Perrault shut down the Gordon batters to seal another Salem State victory to complete the sweep.
Perrault pitched a complete game as she allowed one run off three hits to improve her season record to 6-1. Kline drew the loss in game two as she pitched 3.1 innings, allowing all nine Vikings' runs. Kline is now 1-2 on the season after Tuesday night's loss.
