Golden Bears Survive in Extras to Beat Scots

WENHAM, Mass.—Western New England ended Gordon Softball's three-game winning streak with a doubleheader sweep of the Scots at the Gordon Softball Field on Wednesday. The Golden Bears took game one 11-2 and needed extra innings to beat the Scots 4-0 in the nightcap. Western New England improves to a Commonwealth Coast Conference best 9-1 in conference play, while Gordon falls to 3-9 in the CCC.

Gordon scored the first two runs of the day in the bottom of the first. Rachel Ryder (Telford, Pa.) hit a rocket over the center-field wall as the lead-off batter for the Scots and Marissa Meenan (Wayne, Pa.) later scored in the inning on a fielder's choice play with Emily Kline (Park Ridge, N.J.) at the plate.

It was all Golden Bears (17-9) from there out, as Western New England tied the game at two in the next half inning. The Golden Bears loaded the bases in the frame and scored on a ground out and wild pitch by Kline. The visitors added two more in the third inning with a pair of RBI by Emily Mastropaolo (Cazenovia, N.Y.) and Alexis Bukowski (Wallingford, Conn.) for a 4-2 lead.

Western New England kept the trend going in the fourth inning with two more runs. Heather Fecteau (Biddeford, Maine) doubled to the gap in left center to plate Samantha Mulhern (Worcester, Mass.) before being escorted home on a sacrifice fly by Gabby Lavinio (Dalton, Mass.).

The Golden Bears scored five more runs over the next two innings to end the game after six frames. Fecteau and Bukowski both added two RBI in the game, while Heid Griger (Hyde Park, N.Y.) went the full six innings giving up six hits, two runs and striking out five.

Kline took the loss for Gordon, her sixth of the year.

In game two, Lauren Zambrano (Wallingford, Conn.) and Abigail Knowlton (Deer Isle, Maine) dueled each other to a scoreless tie after seven innings. Each team only had two hits to their name heading into the eighth.

Western New England finally broke through in extras with a four-run rally in the top half of the eighth inning. McKenzie Pezze (Albany, N.Y.) broke the scoreless tie with a RBI single. The Golden Bears eventually loaded the bases, which gave Mulhern and Bukowski chances to drive in three more suns with singles into the outfield.

Gordon was unable to take advantage of bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the eighth and Western New England held off the scare.

Zambrano struckout double-digit batters for the fifth consecutive game, cutting down 13 Gordon hitters in eight innings of work. Knowlton allowed only five hits and K'd one Golden Bear.

Gordon (6-19) has the next two days off before a home doubleheader against Roger Williams on Saturday beginning at noon.
