NEWPORT, R.I.—Big innings spoiled Gordon Softball's thoughts about upsetting preseason Commonwealth Coast Conference favorite Salve Regina on Thursday afternoon. The Seahawks scored nine runs in an inning twice, once in each game, and handed Gordon two five-inning losses. Salve Regina won the two games 14-0 and 11-1, while improving to 5-1 in the CCC. Gordon drops to 1-14 on the season and 0-4 in the conference.
The tough schedule did not let up for the Fighting Scots on Thursday afternoon, playing a preseason favorite to win the conference title for the second day in a row. Salve Regina scored nine runs in the first inning of the first game, while bringing 13 batters to the plate. Gordon was only able to manage two hits against Salve starter Nicole Parry (Quincy, Mass.), who pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts.
Emily Kline (Park Ridge, N.J.) had a double and Marissa Meenan (Wayne, Pa.) contributed the second hit.
The Fighting Scots held Salve's offense at bat over the first three innings of game two, surrendering only two runs during that span. However, the Seahawks exploded for nine runs in the fourth inning to break the game wide open. Gordon nabbed its lone run of the day in the top of the fifth inning when Brie Roberts (Center Conway, N.H.) grounded into a double play, which allowed Kline to score from third.
Kline and Meenan were the only Scots to get hits in game two as well.
Gordon will look to rebound after the break with another CCC away doubleheader at Nichols next Tuesday.
