Throwers Dominate Day at CCC Championships

Meet Results
PORTSMOUTH, R.I.—The 2015 track season closed out for a majority of the Gordon T&F team with a pair of solid finishes at the Commonwealth Coast Conference Championships hosted by Roger Williams. The hosts took both the men's and women's crowns, while Gordon took second and third respectively.

Zak Flowers (Fountain Valley, Calif.) highlighted the day for the Fighting Scots by taking first place in three field events.  The senior started off the day by breaking the school record in the shot put at 13.04 meters. His best throw was a full foot ahead of the next best competitor from Nichols.

Flowers continued his dominance in the hammer throw with a long toss of 49.91 meters. Devin Williams of Nichols finished in second place and his best throw was 18 meters short of Flowers daunting mark. Flowers finished off his victorious day with an easy win in the discus throw at 42.73 meters, eight meters ahead of the second-place thrower.

Neal Olson (Acton, Mass.) kept Gordon near the top of the standings with a win in the 400-meter dash in a time of 51.73. Olson edged out Ian Mitchell of Roger Williams by a second in the first heat. Damon Kilgore (Londonderry, N.H.) won the 1,500 and 3,000 meter races to earn the Fighting Scots 10 points, including a school record in the longer event. Kilgore also ran a personal record in the 5k, despite running 9,500 meters between his three events.

Corrine Previte (Danvers, Mass.) beat Jacqueline Wyka of Roger Williams by a hair in the 400 meter to complete a sweep in the event for the Scots.

The female throwers also had good days for Gordon. Leslie Bynum (Hamilton, Mass.) and Emily Caren (Warwick, N.Y.) went 1-2 in the discus throw. Caren was dominant in the hammer throw later in the day with a toss of 42.38 to leave the competition in the dust and broke a school mark in the process.

A few Scots will take part in the Division III New England Championships at MIT next week.
