WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon Women's Tennis continued its tear through the Commonwealth Coast Conference with a 5-4 victory at Roger Williams on Wednesday night. The Fighting Scots survived a four-hour match to beat the Hawks for the first time since the 2005 season.
 
Gordon improves to 4-0 in the CCC and 5-1 overall, while Roger Williams drops to 2-2 and 4-2 respectively.
 
Roger Williams scored the first point of the day when Kathryn Hughes and Gabrielle Riley beat Lily Drescher (Reading, Mass.) and Gabby Brucker (Eleva, Wis.) 8-1 at third doubles.
 
However, Gordon was able to secure the lead after doubles play with wins at one and two. Justine Hanson (Meadow Vista, Calif.) and Katherine Jeffreys (Parkton, Md.) handled the Hawks' second duo 8-2. Abbie Denney (Peoria, Ariz.) and Tawnie Yeaw (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) held on to edge RWU 8-6 at first doubles.
 
The Fighting Scots came to the brink of victory with straight-set wins at first and second singles by Denney and Hanson, but Roger Williams would come roaring back. The Hawks won all three matches on the bottom rungs of the singles lineup in straight sets to tie the match at four all.
 
Yeaw dropped her first set to Lauren Schmidt without getting a game, but snuck out the second set in a tiebreaker 10-8. The second set win flipped the switch for the senior captain and Yeaw cruised to a 6-1 triumph in the third set to clinch the match for Gordon.
 
Gordon has a quick turnaround as they host non-conference opponent Worcester State at 4 p.m. tomorrow at the Brigham Courts.
