Gordon Stuffs Golden Bears 9-0; Wins Ninth Straight

WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon Women's Tennis ran its win streak to nine matches with a 9-0 victory over visiting Western New England on Monday afternoon at the Brigham Courts. The Golden Bears gave Gordon a run for its money in doubles competition, but the Fighting Scots played better in singles play to remain unbeaten in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.

The Fighting Scots improve to 9-1 on the season and 6-0 in the CCC entering a mid-week match with co-leader Endicott. The Golden Bears drop to .500 on the year and 2-4 in the conference.

Gordon won all three doubles matches to start the match, but Western New England made things interesting at the first and third flights. Lily Drescher (Reading, Mass.) and Gabby Brucker (Eleva, Wis.) doubled up their opponents at third doubles to kick things off. The Scots got another win from their second duo of Justine Hanson (Meadow Vista, Calif.) and Katherine Jeffreys (Parkton, Md.), 8-3.

WNE's Lauren Sell (Milford, Conn.) and Joeanna Glantz (Agawam, Mass.) kept at Gordon's heels at first doubles, but Abbie Denney (Peoria, Ariz.) and Tawnie Yeaw (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) pulled it out 8-5.

Gordon quickly put the match on ice with sound victories at first, fourth, fifth and sixth singles. Jeffreys and Abby Caron (Bedford, N.H.) only dropped one game between them at the fourth and fifth flights.

Yeaw fought through a close first set over Christina D'Agostino (Bohemia, N.Y.) 6-3, before taking the second set without losing a game.

The Golden Bears best chance at a point came from Glantz at second singles. After dropping the first set to Hanson, 6-0, Glantz survived in a tiebreaker to force a third set. Hanson outlasted the WNE junior 10-4 to pull off the sweep in the match.

Western New England will look to claw into the CCC playoffs with matches against Wentworth and Curry this week. Gordon will play for the top seed in the conference tournament on Wednesday when they travel to Endicott (8-2, 6-0 CCC).
