DUDLEY, Mass.—Gordon Women's Tennis got a big monkey off its back by beating conference rival Nichols for the first time in eight years on Saturday afternoon. The Fighting Scots swept the singles lineup and dropped only one doubles match for an unprecedented 8-1 win over the host Bison.
Gordon (2-1, 1-0 CCC) fought its way through doubles action after the Bison took the opening match. Cristina Szepanski (Windsor Locks, Conn.) and Daniela Saldarriaga (Medellin, Colombia) trumped Gordon's freshmen duo at second doubles, but that would be the lone bright spot for the Bison.
Katherine Jeffreys (Parkton, Md.) and
Lily Drescher (Reading, Mass.) put the Scots on the board with a sound 8-5 win at third doubles. Though, it might have been an impressive win at first doubles that turned the switch in the match.
Abbie Denney (Peoria, Ariz.) and
Tawnie Yeaw (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) broke through for a win in a tiebreak, 9-8 to give Gordon its first lead.
One season after a 9-0 loss to the Bison, a new singles lineup made all the difference for the Fighting Scots. Jeffreys put away her opponent at fourth singles while only dropping two games. Denney recorded her first collegiate victory at first singles with a straight-set trumping of Lauren Candia (Anaheim Hills, Calif.).
Abby Caron (Bedford, N.H.) clinched the match for the Plaid after racing past Emma Carey (Venice, Fla.), 6-2, 6-3.
Justine Hanson (Meadow Vista, Calif.) and Drescher each pulled out close two-set matches, while Yeaw survived Ashley Dallaire (East Bridgewater, Mass.) in three. The senior captain won 10-1 in the third-set tiebreaker.
Gordon will look to keep things rolling on Tuesday when Curry come to Wenham for a Commonwealth Coast Conference match.
