Women's Soccer Locks Down Rams at Home

WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon Women's Soccer got its first win of the 2015 in a big way with a 8-0 win over visiting Suffolk on Wednesday afternoon at the Quad. Senior midfielder Jamie Breton (Concord, N.H.) scored her first career hat trick and sophomore Naomi Shearer (Hampden, Maine) added two goals in the victory.

Things got off to a quick start for a Gordon offense that had struggled to find the back of the net in its first two games. Breton finished a deflection off Kirsten Weiker's (Durham, N.H.) initial save to put Gordon on top just six minutes into the opening half.

Shearer made it 2-0 in Gordon's favor in the 24th minute when a two-on-one break culminated with an easy chance for the Scots. Shelby Palafox (Lexington, Mass.) gave the ball to Shearer's feet and the sophomore was able to dribble around Weiker for the second goal of the game.

Just a few minutes later, Breton was at it again. After Suffolk pushed the ball up against Gordon's defense, Kaitlyn Hawn (Woodbury, Minn.) tracked it down and threaded a pass up the seam on the left side. Breton beat her defender in a foot race and used her left foot to put a ball into the top-right corner of the net.

The senior midfielder capped off her three-goal explosion early in the second half when freshman Jill Kefalas (Wenham, Mass.) sent a ball across the face of the goal for Breton to tap into the twine.

Shearer added her second goal of the game in the 61st minute with a nice off-foot goal from just under 20 yards out. Freshman Tori Caswell (Uxbridge, Mass.) scored the first two collegiate goals of her career to put the Scots up seven goals with only minutes to play. Kefalas also added her first college score in the closing minutes on an assist from Caswell.

Suffolk's best chance at scoring came late in the second half when Jennifer Martin (Higganum, Conn.) tried to sent one past rookie keeper Victoria Yetman (Brookeville, Md.), but the freshman was able to stick the ball with her mitts as she was sliding.

The Plaid outshot their opponents 34-3 in the game and 21-3 on frame. Weiker was able to make 13 saves for the Rams in the loss.

Gordon is back in action on Saturday when they play host to Western New England for the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener.
