NEWPORT, R.I.—Gordon Women's Basketball almost clawed all the way back from a double-digit deficit, but a late Salve Regina run secured a 62-48 win for the Seahawks in Commonwealth Coast Conference action. The Scots trailed by as many as 16 in the first half and closed the gap to two in the second half before the Seahawks pulled away.
The Scots remain winless in the CCC at 0-5 and sit at 4-8 entering a showdown with Curry on Saturday. The Seahawks sport an identical 4-8 record overall, but move up to 3-2 in conference play.
A slow start nearly doomed the Fighting Scots over the first 10 minutes as the Seahawks capitalized on a handful of Gordon turnovers. Salve freshman Deanna McCarvell scored nine of her 14 points in the first quarter and the Seahawks scored the final 10 points of the frame to take a 22-6 lead into the final stage of the half.
Gordon played its best basketball of the night in the second quarter as they settled into the rhythm of the game. The Scots scored the first six points of the second period and outscored the Seahawks 17-8 in the frame to close the gap to 30-23 at the break.
The Fighting Scots continued its efficient offensive effort to begin the second half and ultimately tied the game on a triple from first-year
Olivia Stark (Arvada, Colo.) with 6:15 to go in the third quarter. However, the flip side of Gordon's streaky offense reared its head over the final 15 minutes of the game.
Salve ended the period on a 14-1 run as the Scots went cold on the offensive end and put distance back between the two teams. The Seahawks extended its run to begin the fourth quarter and Gordon was never able to get the game back within 10 points.
Sophomore
Kristen Smith (Littleton, Mass.) was the only Gordon player in double digits with 10 points.
Jamie Tafoya (Fort Collins, Colo.) led the Scots in rebounds with six, but the Seahawks held a slight advantage on the glass, 39-35.
