DUDLEY, Mass.—For the third year in a row, Gordon Women's Tennis saw its season come to a close in the Commonwealth Coast Conference semifinals. Top-seeded Nichols did not drop a match during the regular season and showed why in a 5-1 triumph over the visiting Fighting Scots on a misty Tuesday afternoon.
The Bison move to championship Saturday where they will host No. 2 Endicott, a 5-1 winner over Roger Williams on Tuesday. Gordon will next be in action during spring break in March.
Nichols raced out to the early 2-0 lead by taking the bottom two doubles flights, 8-4 and 8-0 respectively. Gordon's top doubles pairing ensured the Scots would not be shutout by taking the match 8-6. Abbie Denney (Peoria, Ariz.) and Justine Hanson (Meadow Vista, Calif.) beat Amarie Settiwongse and Danielle Mandel twice during the season.
NC's Isabelle Leonardi put the Bison up by two with a 6-0, 6-3 result at sixth singles over Haley Bean (Trumbull, Conn.). Megan Nathanson proved to be a tough matchup for Kaelyn Hall (Sugar Land, Texas) as the Nichols freshman did not drop a game in two sets.
Settiwongse got her revenge on Denney in singles action, beating the Gordon sophomore for the second time this season 6-2, 6-1, closing out the match effectively.
Abby Caron (Bedford, N.H.) and Hanson both held set leads over their opponents despite losing in straight sets during the regular season matches. Both matches went unfinished due to the conference rule of playing to decision.
