BOSTON, Mass.—The Gordon Women's Soccer program saw its magical run through the Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament come to a tough ending with a 4-0 loss in the conference title game to Wentworth. The second-seeded Leopards scored a pair of goals in each half, including a converted penalty kick in the second to put the Scots in a deep hole by the middle stages of the final period.
After shocking the conference during the first two rounds of the tournament, Gordon was unable to strike gold on offense for a third time. Much like the first meeting between the two teams, Wentworth's quality attack pressured the Fighting Scots from the opening whistle. To their credit, Gordon was able to hold Wentworth scoreless over the first 25 minutes and forced the Leopards into long attempts. However, Wentworth was able to make good on those attempts with balls into the upper 90.
WIT's Ali Leach (Stowe, Vt.) put the Leopards on the scoreboard in the 25th minute with a nice slotting pass from Emily Richard (Fremont, N.H.). Leach tucked it inside the post for the score.
Right before the half, Wentworth struck again off of a corner kick as Michelle Murphy (W. Islip, N.Y.) poked a service into the top shelf with just over a minute to go until the break.
Senior Mary Pastorelli (Whitesboro, N.Y.) made it a 3-0 game in the 61st minute by converting a penalty kick after the Scots committed a foul in the box. The Leopards capped off their scoring in the 78th minute when rookie Sidney Brogan (Los Angeles, Calif.) sent another ball just under the crossbar, past the outstretched arms of Kali Denty (Marshfield, Mass.).
Denty made nine saves despite suffering the loss. She finished with a .500 keeper record in her rookie debut at 8-8-2.
Wentworth held a 13-2 advantage in shots on goal for the game, as Gordon was unable to force Michaela Robinson (Goshen, N.Y.) into a tough spot over the final 45 minutes.
The Fighting Scots conclude their 2016 season at 8-10-2 after becoming the first CCC eight seed to make the finals.
