WENHAM, Mass.—A sharp-shooting second half carried Emerson to a 65-47 win over Gordon in non-conference women's basketball action at the Bennett Center on Thursday evening. The Lions erupted for six made three-pointers in the third quarter and nearly matched their first-half overall point total in the period to pull away from the host Scots over the final 20 minutes.
The Lions improve their ledger to 5-2 on the season, while Gordon drops to 3-5 this year. The Fighting Scots have yet to put together a win streak during the young season, dropping a home game coming off a dominant performance at Curry on Tuesday. Gordon will look to get back on track on Saturday when UAA foe Brandeis comes to town for a 1 p.m. tip.
Gordon looked good early, making six of its first 11 shots in the opening period to take a 15-14 advantage.
Things took a wrong turn for the home side in the second quarter, as Emerson went on an 11-0 spurt to take a 25-15 lead with just under four minutes to go until half. Gordon was able to shake off a seven-minute scoreless stretch by rallying with a 7-0 run of its own to make it a 25-22 game in Emerson's favor at the break.
Everything went the visitor's way in the third quarter as senior guard Elizabeth Horan (Ashland, Mass.) warmed up from deep. Horan made four triples in the 10-minute period and Emerson went 6-of-9 from behind the arch as a team to quickly balloon its lead to 49-36 entering the final 10 minutes of play. Horan had a team-high 17 points for the Lions.
Emerson's length and discipline on defense gave the Fighting Scots issues during the final three quarters of play and allowed the Lions to close things out in the fourth. Gordon was able to get as close as 14, but Emerson quickly grew the lead back to 22 points in the final few minutes before ending the game with an 18-point winning margin.
The Lions' defensive effort held Gordon to a season-worst 47 points and 29.5 shooting percentage from the field, as Meghan Foley (Malden, Mass.) was the only Scots to reach double-digit scoring with 18.
Emerson received a balanced scoring attack behind Horan, getting 10 and eight rebounds from Charlie Boyle (Scotts Valley, Calif.). Leena Kardacz (Harleysville, Pa.) scored eight, while Natalie Clydesdale (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Quinn Madden (Mokena, Ill.) had seven each off the bench. Sierra Ducey (Poway, Calif.) was held to only two points, but had seven assists and four block shots.
Foley had 18 on 8-of-17 shooting for Gordon and also contributed a game-high four steals. Sarah Gibbs (Elizabethtown, Pa.) had seven rebounds. The Scots outrebounded their opponents 45-43, but turned the ball over 26 times and made a season-low two threes.
