CLERMONT, Fla.—Gordon Softball dropped its final two games during their Florida trip, losing 11-6 to New England College and 10-0 to Emerson. The Fighting Scots rallied in game one to take a late lead, but the Pilgrims came right back to win the game in the 6
th. Emerson controlled the game with the Scots from beginning to end.
The Fighting Scots finish their trip with a 2-6 record, including an impressive win over Susquehanna on Thursday. Gordon is back in action on Wednesday when they host Newbury College for a doubleheader.
Game One: Gordon 6 – 11 NEC The Fighting Scots fell behind in the first inning when Joslyn Gallagher (Fitchburg, Mass.) hit a three-run bomb to straight away center. The Pilgrims added another run in the second on a passed ball to create a 4-0 advantage heading into the middle of the game.
Kaelie Mercado (Granada Hills, Calif.) brought in Gordon's first run of the game to score Megan Jenkerson (McDonough, Ga.), who had tripled earlier in the inning. After NEC added another run in the fourth, Gordon broke through for five runs between the fifth and sixth innings, including another Jenkerson triple which scored two runs.
The 'Grims closed the door on Gordon's comeback with six runs in the sixth inning. NEC had five hits in the frame and earned three walks to put Gordon in an 11-6 hole.
New England College held Gordon scoreless in the seventh to send the Scots to their fifth loss of the season. Debra Mazzeo (Bloomfield, N.J.) earned her first win of the year as NEC improved to 3-5.
Game Two: Emerson 10 – 0 Emerson scored the only run through four innings and off of an error. Gordon out hit the Lions through four frames, 5-2, but failed to knock anyone in from scoring position.
The Lions began to run away with the game over the final three innings, scoring nine times between those three. After fielding a tame offense in the early going, Emerson finished the game with 10 hits and eight of their 10 runs were earned.
Sarah Ryder (Telford, Pa.) went 3-for-3 in the game, but the rest of the lineup could only muster three hits.
Emerson senior pitcher Samantha Corey (Londonderry, N.H.) struck out 11 batters.
