Nelson Breaks Record at Silfen Invitational

Meet Results
NEW LONDON, Conn.—Senior Wes Nelson (Charlton, Mass.) headlined a solid two-day effort at the uber-competitive Connecticut College Silfen Invitational by breaking the all-time Gordon record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday evening. Three other Gordon athletes earned points in a showdown of some of the finest Division III track and field athletes in the Northeast.

The Gordon men totaled eight points over the weekend, with three athletes earning at least one score. That score was good enough for 16th, just a few points behind Commonwealth Coast Conference rival Roger Williams. NESCAC power Tufts took home the men's title with 179 points.

On the women's side, Tufts also ran away with the meet championship as the only team above the 100-point threshold. Gordon earned two points on Saturday, which put them 19th.

Highlights:
  • Nelson broke the school record by nearly three seconds with a time of 10:13.60. The previous mark was set back in 2009 by Dan Gaunya. Nelson finished in sixth and earned four of Gordon's eight points.
  • Junior Edison Thayer (Boxford, Mass.) earned a spot in next month's NCAA Division III New England meet with a sixth-place finish in the javelin. His toss of 50.48 meters won the second flight on Saturday and gave the Scots three points.
  • Alex King (St. Croix Falls, Wisc.) became the last male to register a point by clearing nearly 12 feet on the pole vault. King has improved in each meet and was a mere inch away from tying the program record.
  • Junior Corrine Previte (Danvers, Mass.) was the only Scot woman to earn a point over the weekend. The sprinter was seventh in the fastest heat of the day in the 200m with a time of 26.32.
