WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon Softball got a much-needed boost after a tough day on Friday, sweeping a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader with Wentworth.
Marissa Meenan (Wayne, Pa.) celebrated Senior Day with her 100
th career hit as Gordon won both games 5-1 and 10-3 at the Gordon Softball Field.
The Fighting Scots swept a series for the second time in three days and improved to 8-19-1 on the season. Gordon is also now 3-11 in the conference with only two series left to play. Wentworth fell to 4-17 overall and 0-10 in the CCC.
The Fighting Scots honored seniors
Alyssa Unumb (Bedford, Mass.),
Hope Zigterman (Villa Park, Ill.) and Meenan between the two games.
Game One: Wentworth 1 – 5 Gordon The Leopards put the first run of the game on the board before the Scots to register three outs in the opening frame. A throwing error put a damper on an otherwise sound inning for the Gordon defense and Rachel Willcutt (Tilton, N.H.) made the Scots pay with a two-out single to score the go-ahead run.
However, Gordon starter
Emily Kline (Park Ridge, N.J.) shut the Leopards out over the final six innings and let the Scots offense do its work. Kline helped herself in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly to right field to score
Megan Jenkerson (McDonough, Ga.), tying the game at one.
Four innings passed with as much as a peep from either offense, but Gordon took control in the bottom of the fifth.
Katie Dariano (Albany, N.Y.) slapped a single up the middle to start things off and Unumb reached on a bunt single down the first-base line to put two runners on.
Wentworth starter Hayley Rutkey (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) got the next two batters out, but
Sarah Ryder (Telford, Pa.) ripped a two-out single past the pitcher to plate two runs. Kline tripled to the corner in right field on a 1-1 pitch to score Ryder easily from first and made it a 4-1 Gordon lead.
Gordon added an insurance run in the sixth with a solo shot from
Emily Burkhart (Manheim, Pa.), the second home run of her career.
Kline earned her fifth win of the season and struck out eight batters in a full seven innings of work. Rutkey took the loss despite sending down three Gordon batters.
Game Two: Wentworth 3 – 10 Gordon The long ball paced the Gordon offense early in the second game with Kline powering the first pitch she saw to left-center for two runs right off the bat in the first. Jenkerson added another run in the third with a one-run dinger off the post in left field for a 3-0 lead.
Wentworth came storming back with one run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Karsyn Sawyer (Chatham, N.Y.) singled in Megan Berryman (Middleboro, Mass.) to get on the board in the fifth. Heather Pinkston (Concord, Calif.) made it a 3-2 game with an RBI single of her own and then forced an error by the catcher with her base running a play later to bring home the tying run.
Gordon turned the offense on in the bottom of the sixth with seven hits on five hits and two Wentworth defensive miscues. The first five Scots all reached base safely, three by hits and none more important than Unumb's bases-clearing double to the wall in right.
The Fighting Scots made it 7-3 on a fielding error and then broke the game open for good with an RBI double by Meenan to plate two runs. Burkhart capped off the seven-run sixth with a single to the gap in left to bring home Meenan.
Coming in relief, Kline received a 1-2-3 inning to earned her second win of the day and sixth of the year.
Abigail Knowlton (Deer Isle, Maine) earned the no decision in five innings of work. Rutkey was tagged for her second loss of the day in two innings of relief work.
On Deck:Wentworth will look to rebound on Sunday April 17 with its own Senior Day festivities against Nichols. Gordon is off until Tuesday when they host a non-conference doubleheader with Lasell beginning at 3:30.
