Hawks Stop Scots in CCC First Round

BRISTOL, R.I.—Gordon Softball saw its season come to an end in the one-game play-at Roger Williams on Saturday. The No. 5 Hawks took advantage of early Gordon mistakes and cruised to an 8-0 win to advance to the Commonwealth Coast Conference playoffs beginning next week.

Gordon finishes the year at 12-24-1, but drops the play-in game for the third consecutive year.

Taylor Messier set the tone for the Hawks early with a leadoff home run to put Roger Williams up 1-0. The Hawks added another run in the first after a pair of Gordon errors and the Fighting Scots were never able to recover.

Gordon's best chance at climbing back into the game came in the third when Alyssa Unumb (Bedford, Mass.) and Megan Jenkerson (McDonough, Ga.) each singles with two outs. However, Roger Williams was able to make a nice play on a tailing ball to right to end the threat.

Disaster struck for the Scots in the bottom of the third when an error prolonged another inning. Roger Williams scored five times in the bottom half of the frame, but only one was earned due to the costly miscue. The Hawks finished with five hits in the inning, including three doubles.

The Fighting Scots went down in order in both the fourth and fifth innings before the Hawks closed things out in the fifth to force the run rule.

Emily Kline (Park Ridge, N.J.) tied the single-season record for hits at 48 with a base knock in the second inning. She also tied Skylar Bareford's '14 record for pitching appearances.

Jenkerson became the single-season leader for at-bats, while four players were credited for most games played in a season.
