Scots Handle Leopards for Shutout

WESTON, Mass. – The Gordon College women's tennis team notched its second straight win on Friday afternoon with a 9-0 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology in Commonwealth Coast Conference action.

The match began on Wednesday afternoon at Eastern Nazarene College before a thunderstorm raced through the area at the conclusion of doubles play where the Fighting Scots led, 3-0. Play was suspended due to the inclement weather and was resumed this afternoon at Regis College.

Gordon improves to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in CCC play while the Leopards fall to 1-5 (1-3).

Sophomore Kaelyn Hall (Sugar Land, Texas) and junior Maddie Berry (Paso Robles, Calif.) picked up an 8-0 win over freshman Olivia DeLuca (Andover, Mass.) and junior Emily Jodoin (Burrillville, R.I.) at No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Gabrielle Brucker (Eleva, Wis.) and senior Abby Caron (Bedford, N.H.) teamed up at No. 3 to defeat sophomores Ellen Butts (Brookfield, Mass.) and Veronica Monteiro (North Andover, Mass.), 8-2. Sophomore Abbie Denney (Peoria, Ariz.) and sophomore Justine Hanson (Meadow Vista, Calif.) took an 8-1 decision over juniors Caitlyn Briggs (Lee, Mass.) and Sam Webb (Duxbury, Mass.) at No. 1 before the match was halted due to weather.

When the match resumed, Hall defeated Jodoin, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3 and Denney clinched the win with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Briggs at No. 1.

Senior Haley Bean (Trumbull, Conn.) defeated sophomore Kelsey DeGouveia (New Bedford, Mass.), 6-2, 6-2, at No. 6, Berry defeated Butts at No. 5, 6-1, 6-2, Hanson defeated DeLuca, 6-, 7-5, at No. 2, and Caron bested Webb, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 4.

Wentworth returns to the court on Saturday at Roger Williams. Gordon will play the Hawks in its next match, scheduled for Tuesday in Wenham.
