SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—A stellar 7-2 showing helped Gordon Women's Tennis spoil Senior Day for host Western New England on Saturday afternoon at the Volvo Courts. The Fighting Scots swept doubles competition and looked solid in singles play to improve to 4-2 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.
Gordon handed the Golden Bears just their second loss of the 2016 season and did so in convincing fashion. The Fighting Scots won first and third doubles quickly, 8-3 and 8-1 respectively. Sophomore
Kaelyn Hall (Sugar Land, Texas) and junior
Maddie Berry (Paso Robles, Calif.) had their hands full at the second flight for awhile, but completed the clean sweep with an 8-5 result.
Abbie Denney (Peoria, Ariz.) and
Justine Hanson (Meadow Vista, Calif.) won in straight sets despite playing on short rest after the two competed at the ITA New England event on Friday.
Abby Caron (Bedford, N.H.) also won in straight sets at the fourth flight, while Hall rebounded from a first-set loss to take Gordon's seventh point of the day.
Western New England received wins from Morgan Schrader and Corey St. Louis at the fifth and sixth flights to make it a closer match.
Gordon (5-3) will host conference-leading Nichols on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
