WENHAM, Mass.—Endicott Women's Tennis showed why they are the defending Commonwealth Coast Conference champions, beating Gordon 7-2 in the home opener for the Fighting Scots. Sophomore
Abbie Denney (Peoria, Ariz.) picked up both of Gordon's points at first doubles and singles.
Endicott improves to 2-1 on the season and 2-0 in the CCC heading into a Saturday showdown with NESCAC foe Colby in Beverly. Gordon falls below .500 at 1-2 on the season and pulls even to 1-1 in the conference. The Fighting Scots will look to get back on track when they travel to Milton to take on Curry at noon on Saturday.
Justine Hanson (Meadow Vista, Calif.) and Denney picked up the first point of the day for either team, with Gordon's top duo notching an impressive 8-3 showing over Hayley Barnett (Marlboro, N.J.) and Margot Andreasen (Portland, Maine).
Endicott got a point right back with an 8-3 result at third doubles before doubling up Gordon's second flight to take a 2-1 match lead.
The rival Gulls swept the bottom of the lineup in succession to clinch the match at 5-1. Endicott also took the second and third singles flights before Gordon was able to pull off its second victory of the day.
Denney avenged a loss to Barnett during their rookie seasons with a three-set thriller. Barnett looked sharp early with a 6-2 first set, but Denney grabbed a gritty 6-4 win in the second set to force a super tiebreak third. The two top players battled back and forth in the tiebreak, but Denney squeaked by her opponent 10-8 to make it a closer score overall.
