WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon Women's Basketball snapped a four-game losing streak to head into the second half of their Commonwealth Coast Conference schedule on a high note, handing visiting Wentworth a 68-57 loss. Guards Brooke Dyson (Houston, Texas) and Meghan Foley (Malden, Mass.) each scored 15 points to help the Fighting Scots pull away late in the game.
A methodical first half transpired with neither team leading by more than four points, an advantage held by the Scots with five minutes remaining in the first quarter. The combination of Sam McGibbon (Pembroke, Mass.) and Haley Sabino (Topsfield, Mass.) worked wonders for the Leopards in the first quarter, leading them to a 16-15 edge entering the second.
The seesaw battle continued with the Fighting Scots being the ones two outscore their opponents by a single point and the two teams entered intermission knotted at 27.
Leading 40-39 with 2:25 to go in the third quarter, Gordon finally made its move on offense. Foley hit a running floater before Dyson nailed a three following a defensive stop to suddenly put the Scots up by six. Gordon would take that six-point edge into the fourth quarter and quickly balloon it up to 16 points as a part of an 18-3 run spanning both quarters.
Wentworth was able to halve the lead with eight consecutive points on the back of Sabino, but Gordon was able to make a majority of its free throws in the final minutes to keep the Leopards at a comfortable distance.
Wentworth falls to 2-14 this season and 0-9 in the CCC. The Leopards received an outstanding 23-point effort from Sabino, as the junior was one rebound short of a double-double. Kellie Messer (Hollis, N.H.) and McGibbon each chipped in 11 points.
Other than Dyson and Foley's 30 points combined, Kristen Smith (Littleton, Mass.) added a season-high 11 off the bench to go with seven boards. Sophie Linnell (Richmond, Va.) also notched a season-high with 10 rebounds and nine points in a reserve role. Foley pitched in the team highs in steals and assists with four each.
Gordon (6-10, 4-5 CCC) has a few days to prepare for Western New England, who currently sits in second at 7-2 in the CCC. The Leopards host Nichols on Saturday in search of their first league victory.
