Box Score Despite outscoring their hosts in the second half, the Fighting Scots could not overcome a slow start and eventually ceded a 58-51 loss in Commonwealth Coast Conference women's basketball action tonight in RWU's Campus Recreation Center.
With the loss the Scots fall to 7-15 overall (5-10 CCC) while Roger Williams adds another tally to the win column at 16-6 overall (14-1 CCC).
Gordon's charge was led by freshman guard Megan Foley (Malden, Mass.) who booked a game-high 23 points for the third time this season, 14 of which came in the Scots' second half rally. The Hawks were paced by senior forward Bridget Quilty (Duxbury, Mass.) who recorded a 17-point, 10-rebound double double, while junior forward Mariah Nicholas (Acushnet, Mass.) followed with 13 points and freshman guard Sam Leone (Ashland, Mass.) added 12.
Â
It was a low-scoring affair early on with both teams combining for only eight points over the first three-plus minutes of play. The 4-4 tie would last for over two minutes until Nicholas laid in a bucket with just over four minutes left in the first quarter. She would later convert a three-point play for a five-point Hawk lead.
Â
Gordon managed to knot the game at nine with a trey by Foley and a pair of free throws from sophomore guard Brooke Dyson (Houston, Texas), but RWU's Anna Walther (Jr./Northampton, Mass.) responded with a jumper at the buzzer for an 11-9 first quarter Hawks lead.
Â
Roger Williams maintained its lead for the first half of the second quarter, but Foley gave Gordon its first break of the game at the 5:43 mark with a steal and a bucket to make it 16-15 in favor of the Scots. That would be their last basket of the period, however, as the Hawks ended the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 24-16 halftime lead.
Â
Quilty gave Roger Williams its first double-digit lead with a pair of free throws with 6:50 left in the third for a 29-18 advantage while the Scots failed to score in the first three minutes of the frame. Gordon managed to pull within six but the Hawks eventually grabbed a 42-34 edge entering the fourth and never allowed the Scots closer than six the rest of the way to claim their 14th CCC win of the season.
Â
Both teams will be on the road on Saturday as Gordon travels to face Wentworth and Roger Williams heads to Endicott.
