Scots, Vikings Trade Barbs in Doubleheader

SALEM, Mass.—Salem State and Gordon split a softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field. Caitlin Catalanotto's (Kingston, N.H.) pitched a complete game and Gordon used a six-run first inning to hold on for a 7-6 victory over Salem State in game one. Catalanotto went all seven innings, allowing six runs on eight hits with six walks and five strikeouts. In game two, IIeish Burney (Brisotl, Conn.) pitched a seven-inning shutout as the Vikings blanked the Fighting Scots 5-0. Burney scattered seven hits, struck out seven and allowed a walk in the victory.

Salem State is now 17-11 while Gordon goes to 12-18.

Game 1

Gordon exploded for six runs in the opening inning off starter Dominique Del Vecchio (Stoneham, Mass.). Laura Bieren (Groton, Mass.) doubled in the first run as six of the first seven batters reached base. A Sarah Ryder (Telford, Pa.) single and a wild pitch made the score 3-0 before Catalanotto's two-run double chased Del Vecchio. Emily Kline (Park Ridge, N.J.) made the score 6-0 with the Fighting Scots' third double of the inning. Del Vecchio lasted just 0.1 innings and allowed six runs on four hits with two walks and a strikeout.

Salem State came right back with two runs in the bottom of the first when Chloe Manousos (Lowell, Mass.) tripled in a run and Samantha Holey (Lynn, Mass.) added a sacrifice fly. A four-run second tied the score as a Jess Raymond (Peabody, Mass.) single, Jen Crovo (Melrose, Mass.) two-run triple and Marisa Sanchez (Framingham, Mass.) RBI double accounted for the scoring.

Megan Jenkerson (McDonough, Ga.) regained the lead for Gordon with a run-scoring double in the third. Black pitched 6.2 innings in relief, shutting down the Gordon offense over the final four innings.

The junior allowed just one run on nine hits with a strikeout in the loss. Catalanotto allowed just two hits after the second inning.

Kline finished 3-for-4 with a double, triple and run batted in for Gordon. Bobbie Dee Regan (Lynn, Mass.) collected two hits and a run for Salem State.

Game 2

Del Vecchio put Salem State on top, 2-0 in the second game as the first baseman tripled in two runs with two outs in the bottom of the second inning. Molly McLean (Woburn, Mass.) increased the lead to 3-0 with an RBI single in the third.

Burney cruised through the first four innings, allowing just four hits while striking out four batters. Raymond launched her first home run of the year in the fourth to extend the lead to 4-0.

Holey's solo home run in the fifth pushed the lead to five runs. The Fighting Scots threatened in the sixth, placing runners on second and third, but Burney worked out of the jam with a called third strike on Emily Burkhart (Manheim, Pa.). Burney shut down the side in the seventh, allowing just a single, to improve to 6-5 on the season. Abigail Knowlton (Deer Isle, Maine) went the distance for Gordon, giving up five runs on nine hits.

Raymond finished 2-for-2 with a home run and RBI and Ivy Bonoldi (Medfield, Mass.) collected two hits and a run for the Vikings.  Carleigh Petersen (North Hills, Calif.) and Jenkerson had two hits apiece for the Fighting Scots.

Salem State goes to UMass Boston tomorrow for a 3:00 PM start while Gordon travels to Nichols on Thursday.

Of Note:
Kline, a junior, knocked in the 100th hit of her career during game one on Wednesday.

Jenkerson broke a single-season record for the second day in a row with her 12th two-bagger of the season.
