Game Recap: Softball |

Big Bats Drive Scots to CCC Sweep

BOSTON, Mass.—Gordon softball picked up its first doubleheader sweep of the 2017 season with a pair of convincing victories at Wentworth on a gloomy Friday evening. The Fighting Scots ended each game in five innings with the offense finding its groove in a set of eight-run victories.

Picking up wins of 9-1 and 11-3, Gordon improves to 7-11 this season and an even 3-3 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. Wentworth remains winless on the year at 0-13 and 0-6 respectively.

The Fighting Scots have now claimed 16 consecutive wins over the Leopards dating back to the 2010 season.

Gordon will look to keep things rolling with a busy weekend ahead of them. The Scots host ENC on Saturday at 1 p.m. before Roger Williams storms into town on Sunday for another two CCC games beginning at one.

Game One

Gordon's Emily Kline (Park Ridge, N.J.) was dominant in the circle in game one, allowing just one hit and one run for the Leopards. In fact, Wentworth's only run of the contest came with Gordon up 9-0 in the fifth inning on a throwing error. Kline picked up her first victory of the season and did not allow an earned run for the second consecutive outing.

The Fighting Scots got the party started in the top of the second with a four-run frame. Emily Burkhart (Manheim, Pa.) singled to shallow left field to easily score Kline from third for Gordon's first run. An error a play later put another run on the board for the Fighting Scots, which was compounded by a two-out, two-RBI triple from the speedy Megan Jenkerson (McDonough, Ga.) to make it 4-0.

Gordon added another run on a pair of errors in the third and then two more in the fourth to put the Leopards in hot water. By the time Gordon's Addy Gibney (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Laura Bieren (Groton, Mass.) knocked in runs with singles in the fifth, the Fighting Scots were up by nine.

Wentworth added an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth, but could not prolong the game with a second score.

Kline struck out three Leopards and walked only one to get the win. Seven different Scots registered at least one hit in the game with Jenkerson getting two hits and two RBI.

Game Two

The offense kept things moving in the day's finale by exploding for 11 more runs against the Leopards to clinch the sweep. Gordon built up a 5-0 lead by the middle of the third inning, including an RBI double for Sarah Ryder (Telford, Pa.) and the unicorn of softball, an inside-the-park home run, hit by sophomore Rose Shannon (Ashland, Mass.).

Wentworth fought back with two runs in the second half of the third, but only one was earned on a single from Rachel Willcutt (Tilton, N.H.).

However, Gordon outscored the hosts 6-1 over the next two innings to win a second straight game on run rule. Kline, Jenkerson and Bieren all generated RBI hits, while Ryder and Lexy Haye (Wells, Maine) drove in runs on sacrifice flies.

Caitlin Catalanotto (Kingston, N.H.) delivered another big pitching performance for the Tartan with only two earned runs allowed on seven hits across five innings. The Gordon rookie also K'd six batters on her way to a sixth win of the season.
