NEWPORT, R.I.—Third-seeded Roger Williams used a five-run sixth inning to knock Gordon out of the Commonwealth Coast Conference softball postseason by a score of 6-0. RWU first-year Rachel Wandzilak (West Islip, N.Y.) allowed only three hits to the eighth-rated Fighting Scots and the Hawks offense got hot late to move further in the elimination bracket.
Gordon's record-breaking 2017 season comes to a close with the Scots recording a 15-22 mark and making the double-elimination round of the tournament for the first time in a decade. Roger Williams (24-17) moves on to play Endicott at 3 p.m.
The Hawks put the first run on the board in the bottom of the first on a throwing error from behind the plate.
A 1-0 game remained deep into the game as both Wandzilak and Gordon freshman Caitlin Catalanotto (Kingston, N.H.) traded blows in the circle.
However, Gordon's offense was never able to put a run together to put pressure on the favored Hawks and the "home" team put their patented stamp on the game in the sixth inning. After loading the bases with one out, Wandzilak walked to score a run to make it 2-0 before back-to-back two-RBI hits put the game out of reach with only an inning to go.
Gordon had a chance to minimize the damage, but a play at the plate was replayed after a chopper was called foul. The Hawks knocked in two runs later in the at bat.
Several records were set in the program during the season, including the team setting the single-year wins mark. Megan Jenkerson (McDonough, Ga.) set a new record with 10 home runs in a season and is quickly approaching the career-best record of 17 after hitting five in her rookie season a year ago. Catalanotto made an instant impact on the program by winning 12 games, a program best, in her first season.
