Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Balanced Attack Leads Scots Past Leopards

In Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action tonight at the Bennett Center, Gordon College Women's Basketball attacked from all cylinders to secure a 64-57 victory over the visiting Leopards from Wentworth. With the win, the Scots completed the season-sweep against the Leopards after defeating them on their home court November 28, 66-58.

For the Scots, Sarah Gibbs had an astounding 24 rebounds and 21 points, Abby Vampatella nearly notched a double-double scoring 16 points and grabbing nine boards, while Brooke Dyson netted 14 points en route to the hard fought victory.

The Leopards were led by Erin Morton (So./Norway, Maine) who booked a team-high 18 points and 15 rebounds, teammate Sam McGibbon (Jr./Pembroke, Mass.) added 13 points, while Stephanie Mini (So./Topsfield, Mass.) chipped in 11 points and five rebounds in the loss.

Both teams are on the road next as Gordon travels to Roger Williams while Wentworth visits Endicott on Saturday February 2 for a 1 p.m. tip-off.

How It Happened
  • There were eight lead changes in the first five minutes of the game until Gordon took control, going on a 10-point run to lead 22-13 to close out the first quarter.
  • A three-pointer from McGibbon at the 6:17 mark in the second tied it up at 24-all. Delaney McDonnell drained a clutch three to quickly take back the lead, 29-26. Both squads traded buckets for the remainder of the quarter with the Scots taking the 34-29 advantage going into halftime.
  • After taking an eight-point lead by way of a Dyson three, the Leopards came crawling back to get within one midway through the third. Morton tossed in a layup to take the first lead for the Leopards since the first quarter, taking a one point lead going into the final frame.
  • Gibbs hit a layup for the first points of the fourth for either team giving Gordon the lead once again. Alisha Henderson netted back-to-back three's to give the Scots some extra cushion room throughout the final minutes. The Leopards came within four points with 35 ticks left on the clock but the Scots pulled away hitting their final few free throws to take the 64-57 victory.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Sarah Gibbs was as dominant as she has been all season, grabbing a career-high 24 rebounds to keep her atop the CCC standings with 211 on the season.
  • Abby Vampatella had a solid game as well, netting 16 points to give the sophomore a new career-high.
  • Tonight's win marks the second year in a row that the Scots have swept the season series against the Leopards.
  • Said by Head Coach Carter Shaw: "This was a nice win for the team tonight. It was a great all-around effort fueled by some outstanding individual contributions. Each player had a portion of the game they stepped up and put their imprint on the win. Brooke and Abby really got us going out of the gate. Laura had some tremendous defensive possessions at important places in both halves and Delaney had a big stretch at the end of the first half where she hit some huge shots. Hannah was steady throughout the game and had her hand in a couple of big second half stops and rebounds. Alisha buried two back-to-back three's that opened up a lead for us we never gave back. And wow! Sarah Gibbs was gigantic tonight with a huge record setting night on the boards. Her twenty-four rebounds and twenty-one points were outstanding. She was just a steady presence in all portions of the game."
