Gulls Stun Scots In PK Heartbreaker

The No. 1 seeded Gordon College Women's Soccer hosted crosstown rival Endicott College in the semifinals of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) tournament tonight. After 110 minutes of hard fought soccer the game was decided by penalty kicks in which Endicott saw the victorious side of the 5-3 shootout.

How It Happened
  • The Gulls got on the board fast as Jaymie Caponigro (Jr./Swampscott, Mass.) chased the ball down the right side of the field and sent a shot into the upper left corner of the goal to give her team the 1-0 lead two minutes into the game.
  • Gordon's Savannah Metz evened out the score when she launched a jaw dropping shot from 25 yards out that soared over the goal keeper's head and into the back of the net. The Scots had two corner kicks to end the half but were not able to convert, entering half with a score of 1-1.
  • In the second half of regulation each goalkeeper had one save to hold the score at 1-1 to force overtime.
  • The Scots came out firing in overtime as senior Ashton Barkey sent a shot on goal but Gulls' keeper Kayla Wentworth (Sr./Taunton, Mass.) was able to get her hands on it to make the save. In the closing seconds of overtime, Endicott got off a last ditch effort shot that soared over the goal to send the game into double overtime.
  • In double overtime, Endicott had a chance to put the game away on a corner kick in the 108th minute but they could not navigate through the Gordon defense. The stalemate continued and after 110 minutes of the play the game ended in a 1-1 draw that would force a penalty kick shootout.
  • The Gulls took the slight advantage in the fourth round of penalty kicks before sealing the deal in the fifth round to give them the 5-3 win.
