Scots Upset Hawks, Edged By Salve In CCC Tourney Showdowns

On Day three of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) postseason tournament, No. 7 Gordon College Softball shocked No. 5 Roger Williams University, 12-6, in game one to advance to the winner's bracket. Facing No. 4 Salve Regina University in their next duel, the Fighting Scots' comeback bid came up just short as the Seahawks held on for the 5-3 win. The Scots wrap the 2019 season as the winningest team in Gordon Softball history with 20 on the year.

Gordon vs. Roger Williams
  • Rose Shannon got her squad on the board first in the top of the second as the senior ripped a single to short, allowing Lily Rivera to score. Two batters later, Gabby Hunt laced a hard hit single up the middle to plate Shannon, giving the Scots a two-run advantage.
  • The Scots tacked on another two runs an inning later thanks to three hits to extend their lead to four. Continuing the theme of scoring two runs an inning, Gordon added two more in the fourth to give them a comfortable 6-0 lead.
  • Roger Williams cut the lead to one after a strong fifth inning for the Hawks, scoring five runs on four hits.
  • Not comfortable with the one-run lead, the Fighting Scots put up four runs in the top of the sixth to double up the Hawks, 10-5.
  • In the top of the seventh, Kaelie Mercado drove in a pair of runs after driving a single right back up to middle to make it a 12-5 ball game.
  • The Hawks were able to score on in the bottom of the seventh, but the Scots' lead was too much as Gordon upset the Hawks, 12-6 to advance.
Gordon vs. Salve Regina
  • In the bottom of the first, Salve's Holly Kathios (Sr./Pelham, N.H.) drove in teammate, Amanda Riley (Sr./Barrington, N.H.), giving the Seahawks an early one-run lead. Kathios made it 2-0 in the bottom of the third as she knocked in Nikki Vanelli (Fr./Quakertown, Pa.) for her second RBI of the afternoon.
  • Salve used a three-run fifth to widen the gap to 5-0.
  • Not going down without a fight, Gordon made it exciting in the top of the seventh. Rookie, Hunt stepped up to the in a two outs bases loaded situation and laced a bases clearing double to right to close the gap to 5-3. However, that was the closest Gordon could get as the Seahawks buckled down to take the 5-3 win.
