Scots Conclude Successful Season On The Road

Box Score With the No. 5 seed in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament, Gordon College Women's Basketball hit the road to square off against No. 4 University of New England Nor'easters in the conference quarterfinals in Biddeford, Maine this evening. It was a neck and neck game throughout, with the Nor'easters sinking a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left to escape a Scots' upset and secure the 60-58 win.

UNE's Abby Cavallaro (So./South Portland, Maine) had 23 points, Madalyn Sanborn (Jr.Lyndonville, Vt.) had 10 points, and Sadie Nelson (Sr./Windham, Maine) had eight points in the win.

How It Happened
  • It was a low scoring affair for both sides in the first quarter with both sides trading shots en route to a 11-11 ball game after the first ten minutes.
  • UNE scored the first five points in the second, but the Scots answered back quickly with five of their own to tie it up at 16-all with 7:25 on the clock. It was locked up again at 18-all then 20-all before UNE took a four-point lead with just over three minutes to go in the half.
  • The Scots found their grove in the closing minutes of the half, capped off by a Foley jumper with one second remaining to cut UNE's lead to one heading into the break.
  • Foley had the hot hand coming out of the locker room, scoring 12 of Gordon's 15 points in the third to hold a 44-43 lead heading into the final quarter.
  • The eighth lead change of the fourth was thanks to a Gibbs layup to put the Scots up 58-57 with 2:09 left in regulation. With 12 seconds left in the game, UNE's Cavallaro went 2-2 from the charity stripe to put her team on top by and secure the eventual narrow victory.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Sarah Gibbs broke the Gordon Women's Basketball's season rebound record. Gibbs registered 344 on the season. The previous record was held by Karen List (Martin) who had 338 in the 1988-89 season.
  • Meghan Foley broke the Gordon Women's Basketball's season points record tonight. Foley finished the season with a total of 625 points. The previous record was 600 which was set by Sarah Deluca in the 2004-2005 season.
  • The Scots graduate Alisha Henderson, Jess Wall, Sarah Gibbs, and Meghan Foley in May.
  • Said Head Coach Carter Shaw: This was a tough finish to an amazing season but I'm so incredibly proud of what this team accomplished. They left everything out there tonight, which was exactly how they played every game. They are gallant competitors who loved to play and made each other better on the court. And I can't even begin to describe how much we are going to miss our four seniors. Not just because of what they achieved together or for the records they broke, although those things will be sorely missed, but for who they are and for how they shaped this program over the last four years.  They are the exact template we desire to find as students, competitors and teammates. I'm so grateful for them, thrilled for what they've accomplished and especially proud of who they've become.  I'm really going to miss them."
